(September 12, 2008)—Fort Hood Friday identified the 22-year-old 1st Cavalry Division soldier who shot his lieutenant to death and then killed himself as Spc. Jody Michael Wirawan of Eagle River, Alaska.
He shot himself to death Monday after shooting 1st Lt. Robert Bartlett Fletcher, 24, of Jensen Beach, Fla. to death.
Fletcher and an unidentified Fort Hood staff sergeant went to the Wirawan’s apartment Monday morning to talk about missing military equipment, Killeen police said.
Wirawan, who was assigned to the 1st Cavalry Division’s 2nd Battalion, 8th Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, was in the process of leaving the military, police said.
A disturbance ensued, and one of the soldiers called 911 to request police assistance.
Officers responded just before 8:40 a.m. Monday to the apartment at 1807 N. 2nd St., and as they arrived, they saw the Wirawan hit Fletcher and then shoot him.
The officers returned fire and Wirawan put his gun to his head and shot himself, police said.
Witnesses said officers fired 20 to 30 rounds.
After the shooting, Killeen detectives removed several military item’s from the Wirawan’s apartment, police said Tuesday.
The items were returned to Fort Hood.
Wirawan joined the Army in May 2005 and served as an armorer.

I,am posting this late! The idiot who wrote " they were probably yelling at him " go and do yourself and shut up. The army is not a preschool..u learn that at basic! And if you didnt learn it at basic u schouldnt be with the REAL men that make the army. You are probably some drug dealer that never was able to take authority and discipline. The army is all about authority. You learn that before you join, while and even after!I learned that just watching SAVING PRIVATE RYAN..lol! To the "save the proud to be american "..author from harker heights, u r probably an old stink that got kicked out years ago ..moved to hh...found a job as a plumber..and hate watching the real heroes that make killeen/ harker heights e.c.t. You wish you could have been one o them?? RIGHT ?? oh, yes iam!! My heart only goes out to the family of the VICTIM.. LT. Fletcher!!! The shooter..i hope you are still burning and hopefully one day this earth will rid itself from species like you! Far fetched ?I Know!
Hey, cc. Save "The Proud to Be an American" Song, tugging at our heart strings. That speech doesn't hold water anymore. Soldiers aren't looked up to any longer due to their antics in society. They're always leaving their mark on the outside world. No one looks up to a guy in uniform anymore. They just say, "Uh oh, here comes trouble."
Im pretty sure some details were left out. The NCO was probably yelling at him along with the L.T.There is no telling of why he did those acts, but if it causes a problem then its a problem. The army would rather help to make a soldiers situation worse by yelling than to actually getting a soldier treated for mental illness. Plus if a LT goes to a soldiers house im pretty sure it wont be a good idea in the end./NF
