(September 14, 2008)--Houston Police Chief Harold Hurtt says officers made about 30 looting arrests in a 24-hour period from 6 p.m. Friday through 6 p.m. Saturday.

Houston officials have issued a weeklong curfew for the city devastated by Hurricane Ike, between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m.

Hurtt says the looting arrests were the result of burglaries at pawnshops, convenience stores and auto-parts stores.

Hurtt said Sunday that the curfew was aimed more at protecting the public, than curbing looting, because most traffic lights are out and there's a lot of debris in the street.

Hurtt says arrests for curfew violations will only be made at "officer's discretion," and Mayor Bill White says the city would not order businesses to close at 9 p.m.

This is the reason some people dont evacuate. They feel the storm is worth the risk for the big pay off.

These guys are lucky they weren't shot. People are sick and tired of thieves and to do this after Ike hit just shows what low life scum bags they are.
