(September 15, 2008)—A search was underway Monday night for the plane carrying the head of the International Boundary and Water Commission, which disappeared on a flight to Texas.
Commissioner Carlos Marin was flying to Presidio to check out flooding along the Rio Grande but the plane did not land as scheduled, the IBWC in El Paso said Monday afternoon.
No other details about the plane or other passengers were available.
Marin heads the U.S. agency responsible for maintaining the U.S. border with Mexico.
The commission said Monday that Rio Grande flood control levees in Presidio County could fail or be overtopped as flooding worsens in the region.
On Sunday, Presidio County officials on September 14 ordered the evacuation of U.S. residents who could be affected.
The U.S. levee system is designed to provide protection against a 25-year frequency flood and expected flood flows could exceed this capacity, the commission said.
