(September 16, 2008)--A tiger is on the loose in Galveston County, Galveston County Judge Jim Yarbrough said Tuesday.

The animal escaped from its enclosure at an exotic pets center, Yarbrough said.

There were earlier reports that a lion had taken refuge in a Baptist Church with its owner on Bolivar Peninsula, as well as of livestock and other animals roaming amid the wreckage left by Hurricane Ike.

Now, Yarbrough says, "Turns out there's a tiger, and I understand he's hungry ... so we're staying away from him."

Yarbrough said everyone in the neighborhood knows the big cat, and that experts were being brought in to rescue it and other animals.

Meanwhile human residents of hurricane-stricken Galveston are now allowed to briefly return to check out their property.

Galveston Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas on Tuesday announced a "look and leave" re-entry advisory on the island between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Galveston residents and business owners must show photo identification at highway checkpoints under the policy.

The city was under a mandatory evacuation order before Ike, which knocked out all medical facilities, water, sewer, electricity and gas services.

Jen: Galveston is not below sea level. Elevation there is 10 feet. I do agree that it is silly to live some place that is below sea level (New Orleans) or not much above it, but you can only help the people out that are in need and hope that they wise up and move away from there and not rebuild like many in New Orleans have. I don't care for the fact that people rebuild in these same areas and complain and gripe when they keep getting their homes distroyed and depend on FEMA and other govt assistance. Fortunately, we live in a place where we are entitled to make such descisions.

Jen: Galveston is not below sea level. You are thinking of New Orleans. It was flooded because of a 20 foot storm surge. If you have ever been there it is obvious it is above sea level. It is hard to tell by reading if the judge was kidding about the tiger being hungry or saying it to reinforce staying out. I do think if you can make it on your own then by all means you should be able to occupy your own property. But that means on your own, no asking for help for anything and whining about not getting it. Works for me.

I agree with the "look and leave" policy. It is the job of the emergency services to insure the safety of all residences. Just because someone MAY have "solar cookers" and "food and water" (even without power?), doesn't mean it is safe. Sewage, debris, building collapse, and now a tiger, make the area unsafe and unhealthy to live. I understand people wanting to return to their homes to rebuild and salvage what they can, but not at the risk of sickness, injury, or even death. Also, 1 for the Safari!! :)

Galveston is below sea level and should never have been populated. It will continue to flood as nature determines. I say let the tiger have it.

How are the people supposed to protect themselves from a tiger?! I hope they find it before it kills someone! They need to go on safari!

IF a family built right, and their house is O.K., and they have solar cookers to use, and they use large metal barrels to burn the filth out of their sewage before planting it in the garden, and they have food and clean water, then they should be allowed to stay in their homes and not have vandels tear beautiful things apart. Perhaps the Texas Attorney General's Office people need to move to Russia, or China, or Cuba. This is The United States of America, and we cherish our individuality and our right to make our own decisions, thank you. People who need to leave will leave on their own, but people who can stay and be safe and in their own homes should stay and be safe and in their own homes. Where there is a will there is a way, when it is the will of God. Period. Coronella Keiper

Awful! Poor people trying to clean up the wreckage of their homes and belongings, now they have to worry about keeping an eye out for a wild hungry tiger!
