(September 16, 2008)--Organized crime is responsible for explosions at a Mexican Independence Day celebration that killed at least seven and injured more than 100 in a colonial city of Morelia, a Mexican governor said Tuesday.
The attack happened on Monday just as Gov. Leonel Godoy was delivering the traditional "grito," or shout for independence, in Morelia's main plaza, where thousands had gathered to celebrate.
Godoy said authorities believe someone launched several grenades into the crowd.
Godoy is governor of Michoacan, which is the home state of President Felipe Calderon, who condemned the attack in a televised address to the nation on Tuesday.
Members of Mexico's drug cartels and criminal networks have been slaying rivals in increasingly large numbers and publicly dumping beheaded corpses as signs of their power and impunity, but the attack in Morelia was one of the boldest yet.
