(September 17, 2008)—Texas executed death row inmate William Murray, 39, Wednesday evening for the rape and strangulation of a 93-year old Kaufman County woman during a break-in that netted him $10 in change.
The victim was strangled with an ace bandage, which was tied around her neck and mouth and also suffered blunt force injuries.
Murray apologized before he was put to death in Huntsville for the 1998 slaying of Rena Ratcliff.
"I'm sorry for what I did,” he said.
Murray looked at two nephews of his victim who watched him through a window in the death chamber.
"I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive me. The Lord has forgiven me,” he said.
Murray then looked through an adjacent window where his mother and two brothers were among the witnesses and said: "I'll be there waiting for y'all, all right? God Bless."
