(September 22, 2008)—A recent study finds a lot of youngsters taking eighth-grade algebra are in way over their heads.
According to the study conducted by the Brookings Institution, many students do not excel in math at all but find themselves placed in an advanced course anyway.
Algebra, considered a "gateway" course for higher level subjects like Calculus, is now a required course for eighth-graders in some states. It is, however, still an advanced optional course in Texas.
The Brookings study says overall math scores are up, but not for algebra. Math experts say what's needed is better preparation in earlier grades.
