(September 23, 2008)--The trial for a Texas man accused of introducing the first wild hogs to western Wisconsin is set to resume next month after a delay to accommodate a witness.

A complaint accuses Robert Scott Johnson of San Marcos of driving a trailer carrying wild hogs from Texas to Crawford County, Wis., in February 2002.

The complaint says that when Johnson neared Gays Mills, Wis., he opened the trailer and released about 30 of the wild hogs.

The complaint says a self-sustaining wild pig population has established itself in the county since then, carrying diseases and destroying crops.

Johnson could face more than $31,000 in fines for illegally stocking wild animals.

His trial began Sept. 5 but was postponed until Oct. 24 after a warden couldn't make it to court to testify.
