Sex Offenders' Work Information Made Public In Texas Save Email Print

(September 23, 2008)--The Texas Department of Public Safety’s Registered Sex Offender registry online now includes information about where the registered sex offenders in the state work, in addition to where they live.

The DPS has been working on the addition to the registered sex offender Web site since early 2008 in response to a federal law that requires such information should be made public.

Some lawmakers on Capitol Hill are raising the question whether making employment information available will hinder sex offenders' ability to get jobs and therefore hurt their rehabilitation.

Women, as fresh/sophs did you not look at the SR boys and wish they were your guy? Men, as a JR or SR how many of you dated fresh/soph girls? How many of you married your HS sweetheart? So unless you both have the same bday one of you was 17 when the other was 16. This could have easily been YOU! In many of these teenage cases the reason the boy got in trouble is because either 1) parents didnt like the boy, 2) the parents wanted to punish their daughter for being a "bad girl." or 3) the girl is covering up for her own mistake and got caught and the only way out of trouble was to pass the blame on. It's easy to take the side that says throw the book at the bad guy, lock them up and throw away the key. Not everyone on this list falls into that group. Maybe 20-30% are the extremely dangerous ones. Let's encourage our govts and police to focus on those people. That is how we can all fell safer. But we also have to be good parents as well. If you have teenagers talk to them about this.

What is more vital to know? Who can really cause you more damage to your everyday life? The drunk driver or the sex offender? Drunk drivers KILL people everyday. I would much rather know where they are than where a RSO lives or works. For those of you that think this is a great idea I feel that you are misguided. RSO's have the LOWEST re-offense rate of any felony group. Murderers and burglary/robbery are much higher. Drunk drivers, please its much higher. Those are the people I am worried about. Sex offenses happen predominately by people that know you already; Family, friends, pastors and teachers. People who are NOT on the list already. What will you do about those people? How will you know who to be alert for? Most of us with 2nd chances already have paid our debt just like the murderer and the lifelong B and E guy. Our existence wont wipe out a family of 4 on a Friday night either. Some of us were just dumb one night long ago. Energy like this should be focused elsewhere where needed.

If one is already a reg sex offender than it is safe to assume that they are NOT working in a job that has anything to do with children. They are not going to be daycare workers or teachers or bus drivers. Who cares if they are an accountant or a mechanic or a computer repairman? Lets use common sense. All this does is cause panic among the uneducated and I dont mean intelligence I mean about the offenses. You feel better about knowing where we live, fine, I get that. Dont send your kid to my house to borrow sugar or trick or treat. But when it comes to me picking my life up and doing as I am supposed to do leave it alone. Many of us are productive, law abiding citizens that learned from our stupidity. We have made something of our second chances and have families and children of our own now. Do you want us to lose our jobs? Would that make you feel safer having depressed and angry people out and about? What would you want if it was your son who was dumb that one night?

Employers might think twice before hiring since their name is on the page! Best thing a sex offender can do is leave the country or join a biker gang in the desert. Their days are over in the world they once lived! Either way, happy trails to them!

We have a sex offender who lives right across the street from our middle school. He sits on his bicycle in the driveway and watches kids walk home from school. He also rides in front of the gym when the girls volleyball team plays. Cops cant touch him, so they say. I myaself have called him in 3 times for being too close to the blacktop before school and during lunch. Police do nohing but tell him to go back inside.

Why should it matter if it hinders them finding a job - i dont want to work with them anyways - and as far as "rehabilitation" do they honestly believe someone like that can be fully rehabilitated. its sick. sick, sick, sick. Way to go Capitol Hill - worry more about a sicko's rights than the good people and innocent children.

I agree William. I have kids... I want to know where these people are. If you ask me, they give up the rights to privacy and a decent job when they decide to sexually assault a child.

The best way to not be a victim is to be aware and alert. How would it help if an offender was working at McDonalds, which has just recently signed on with the gay/lesbian alliance, and they did not mention they had sexual predators working there? How safe would all those children be? Micky Dee's ain't gonna tell you they got a pervert working there, how would you know?.

I agree with you William. Those offenders don't care one bit about how the lives of victims are affected after what they they've caused. They live with guilt and shame for the rest of their lives even if no one knows, it still haunts them. So why should ANYONE at all care about them not being able to get/keep a job because of their stupidity. They are ridiculous excuses for humans I don't feel sorry for them in the least. They'd just be upset that it wouldn't be as easy for them to hunt down innocent children.

I am glad that we can now find out if we are working with or around a sex offender, and I can care less is the ACLU or the state lawmakers have any issues with this. We have the right to know where these people live and work, and if they can't get a decent job that is their problem not mine.
