(September 25, 2008)—James Michael Grant II has learned the length of his sentence after he pleaded guilty to taking part in the murder of his father.

After Judge Philip Zeigler, of the 52nd State District Court, in Gatesville, reviewed some evidence, he re-convening the hearing and issued a of sentence 45 years in prison.

Both the prosecutor and defense rested their cases in the punishment hearing for Grant II at about 10 am Thursday after the defense called just four witnesses.

Grant II pleaded guilty to taking part in the Sept. 15, 2007 stabbing death of his father, James Michael Grant, Sr.

John Hopkins, 27, and Leslie Megan Lewis-Grant, 43, -- Grant II's mother -- both of Gatesville, also are charged with capital murder for their parts in the killing.

Grant's body was found near a pickup truck on Greenbriar Road, east of Gatesville, after a sheriff's deputy responded to the scene on a suspicious vehicle call.

Investigators quickly proved Grant had been murdered in his bed at home and his body had been moved to the spot where it was found in that truck.

The arrest affidavit for Hopkins indicated he admitted to stabbing Grant while he slept.

He also told investigators Grant II helped him move the body and Lewis-Grant helped cover up the crime.

What the heck happened to this family? When I knew them, they were the kindest people you would ever meet. Mike was a nice, hard working man and Megan was a sweetheart. I too thank God every day that Mrs. Nancy Grant wasn't around to see this. How I adored that woman. She was my boss for 3 years while I was in school and the best boss/friend anyone could ask for. I can't believe Mike is gone and at the hand of his own family. RIP, Mike. RIP.

I agree with the prison sentence at an adult prison, the term could have been longer though. At that age, you know the laws, you know right from wrong, no way around it. He was what, 16? 2 years from being an adult, you dont go from knowing nothing, to knowing the laws and right from wrong in 2 years, otherwise 18 wouldn't be considered adult. 16 years old is when we let you get behind the wheel and drive yourself, you think that would be happening if we did not know right from wrong at that age? People make mistakes, it's not the age, it's the person. He may have had a tough home life, but he knew what he was doing, and EVEN, and I say EVEN, if he didn't.... he would AT LEAST show some remorse for it once he realized what he had done. He deserves a prison sentence at an adult prison. Sorry to friends or family, but the law is the law, right and wrong are still right and wrong, family or not. If you did not know this man, you would feel completely different about it.

Once he gets into prison, he will find others to bully, will constantly be in trouble and will never get out...he will be home. That's the way it should be for someone who thinks he did nothing wrong.

Jamie does need to be off the streets..but NOT in an adult prison. He has been abused by BOTH of his parents his whole life. What more PROOF does anyone need then that he COULD HELP commit murder and seemingly have no remorse. He was only a pawn to his parents, used to hurt each other. His meds were with held from him. Megan WAS abused by Mike.. The whole story is sad sad sad. I am only grateful Nancy is no longer wih us to see this mess. Ms. Tant our prayers our with you. Jamie DID say he DID not want to live with his dad YEARS AGO, and was ignored by the "system" then. Some are GLAD Mike cant be brought back, but how he went was wrong. Since the world wants to call Jamie a sociapath why isnt he being treated as criminally insane instead being thrown in with more adults to be abused. His mother KNOWS what kinda hell is found in adult prisons, and still she risked having her own son in one..

I have no idea of what life behind bars is like, how will Jamie be treated in a grown man's prison?

Posted by: Alison Location: Round Rock on Sep 26, 2008 at 11:49 AM
Jamie is a sociopath and deserves what he got. If there is any truth to the rumors about Mike being abusive (which I highly doubt) then he should have gone through the proper channels to protect himself. Either he did and there was no evidence of abuse OR he never did because the abuse wasn't happening. To be quite frank, I truly believe that justice was done in this case. It doesn't bring Mike back and it doesn't take away from the heartache of losing a loved one, but at least we know that there is one less sociopath walking our streets.

I, too, am family to this young man. My heart goes out to his grandmother and her siblings. This is tragic. He is a very confused young man and I will pray for him. My prayers also go out to Nancy and family....God love you and we are thinking about you. I know it has been a really tough year. You are in our thoughts.

Well COUSIN sorry you are heart broken but just like JUST SAYIN said they all took the law into thier own hands and now must face the consequences of thier actions and accept the fact that life behind bars is where they will all end up. You are right one day we all will be judged looks like they will be judged twice.

I know this is hard for the family on both sides but you have got to see it for what it is. This boy is cold blooded. I am mad that the gave him a plea, he should have got life without parole. Everyone knows right from wrong at that age. Everyone at the age knows that death is final. Yes he was a screwed up kid but so was Jeffery Dahmer and look what he ended up getting into. If you are related to these people I am sorry for your loss and please do not take offense to my statement. But please do not offended these people just because they are your family. What they did is wrong and they should be punished accordingly.

Cousin...are you talking about the type of compassion for others that Jesus sees in people, or the type of compassion that a mother had for her own son to talk him into helping take his own fathers life? One day we will all be judged for our actions here on earth, but while we ARE on this earth, there are laws. People make the laws. People brake the laws. People must pay.

After going to school with James II I can't knowlegdably say that there was no remorse for what he had done to his father. He openly admitted to the classroom that his father completley deserved what he got. Somehow I find that hard to belive, every child will and im sure has gone through some hardships, Many. But there is no excuse for taking someones life out of the selfishness of your own anger, especially someone thats your family. Justice can only be served so far.... Yes, people are judged, everyday of their lives. But i'm sorry to say the judgement that Grant II, the mother and he boyfriend has recieved here, will not nearly compare to the judgement he will see when his days are up. and he's judged up above.

Posted by: Michelle Location: California on Sep 25, 2008 at 09:44 PM
Justice cant be served. You cant bring Mike back....

The day finally came for Jamie. He will be an old man when he gets out. At the earliest he will be what 40? If he can stay on the good behavior list. I hope he gets the help he needs. Being 16 and put in an adult prison. A life he can't imagine. Dealing with gangs, fighting for survival and a place not to mention getting punked. Not good things ahead!

Posted by: In the know Location: Gatesville on Sep 25, 2008 at 04:07 PM
I also wanted to say I agree with you about consequences. The remaining two should never be able to get out, and honestly neither should Mike's son. He has so much hatred in his heart for that family that they would never be safe with him on the streets!

Posted by: Cousin on Sep 25, 2008 at 03:59 PM
I'm heart broken that he got 45 years. None of you know the entire situation unless you were directly a part of it, and none of you ever will. Everyone focuses on the Grant family, but the other side of Jamie's family has been through it tenfold in the past year. I can only hope one day people will learn to show compassion for others. We will all be judged and "sentenced" at some point in our lives. Let's all focus on our own life and make sure we live the kind of life that will get us a rightful sentence.

he thinks he is wait tell he gets there. i have been there

Good. Now let the mother and "friend" get the max and justice will be served. I am all for helping those in situations such as what may have been going on here, but once they take the law into thier own hands, they need to face the consequences of thier actions.

he should have gotten more than 45 years
