(September 25, 2008)—James Michael Grant II has learned the length of his sentence after he pleaded guilty to taking part in the murder of his father.

After Judge Philip Zeigler, of the 52nd State District Court, in Gatesville, reviewed some evidence, he re-convening the hearing and issued a of sentence 45 years in prison.

Both the prosecutor and defense rested their cases in the punishment hearing for Grant II at about 10 am Thursday after the defense called just four witnesses.

Grant II pleaded guilty to taking part in the Sept. 15, 2007 stabbing death of his father, James Michael Grant, Sr.

John Hopkins, 27, and Leslie Megan Lewis-Grant, 43, -- Grant II's mother -- both of Gatesville, also are charged with capital murder for their parts in the killing.

Grant's body was found near a pickup truck on Greenbriar Road, east of Gatesville, after a sheriff's deputy responded to the scene on a suspicious vehicle call.

Investigators quickly proved Grant had been murdered in his bed at home and his body had been moved to the spot where it was found in that truck.

The arrest affidavit for Hopkins indicated he admitted to stabbing Grant while he slept.

He also told investigators Grant II helped him move the body and Lewis-Grant helped cover up the crime.

What the heck happened to this family? When I knew them, they were the kindest people you would ever meet. Mike was a nice, hard working man and Megan was a sweetheart. I too thank God every day that Mrs. Nancy Grant wasn't around to see this. How I adored that woman. She was my boss for 3 years while I was in school and the best boss/friend anyone could ask for. I can't believe Mike is gone and at the hand of his own family. RIP, Mike. RIP.

I agree with the prison sentence at an adult prison, the term could have been longer though. At that age, you know the laws, you know right from wrong, no way around it. He was what, 16? 2 years from being an adult, you dont go from knowing nothing, to knowing the laws and right from wrong in 2 years, otherwise 18 wouldn't be considered adult. 16 years old is when we let you get behind the wheel and drive yourself, you think that would be happening if we did not know right from wrong at that age? People make mistakes, it's not the age, it's the person. He may have had a tough home life, but he knew what he was doing, and EVEN, and I say EVEN, if he didn't.... he would AT LEAST show some remorse for it once he realized what he had done. He deserves a prison sentence at an adult prison. Sorry to friends or family, but the law is the law, right and wrong are still right and wrong, family or not. If you did not know this man, you would feel completely different about it.

Once he gets into prison, he will find others to bully, will constantly be in trouble and will never get out...he will be home. That's the way it should be for someone who thinks he did nothing wrong.
