(September 28, 2008)—The Killeen School Board will soon begin a search for a successor after Superintendent Dr. Jim Hawkins announced Friday he will retire effective Dec. 19 after four years at the helm of the largest school district in Central Texas.

Hawkins and his wife, Nancy, will move closer to their sons and families in Georgia, where Hawkins has accepted a position as superintendent.

During the four years Hawkins served as superintendent in Killeen, the district’s enrollment increased from 33,500 to a projected 39,500 for the current school year.

Under his leadership, the district has opened two new middle schools and five new elementary schools and is building another new elementary school and a new middle school.

If I were you, I would worry less about the budget and more about your spelling. Waisted should be wasted and Schlecty should be Schlechty. Could the concern be that educators had to work smarter or that fact that you had to work harder?

I agree with good riddance, Goodbye sir, and dont let the door hit you in you pockets! The district is understaffed in all areas. And WHY does Cloud Construction have an office available to them ON school property. That means people from Cloud have keys to gates and free access to ALOT of school property. (Check it out on Atkinson, next to the new bus barn.) Is this another one of Mr. Hawkins deals? Curious isnt it.

Good...a few more people should retire with him, like Coach Gray and Coach Showers at Shoemaker High School, if they don't retire at least remove them from the Athletics Department.

its about time he goes somewhere else. all he cared about was making money and nothing else. he waisted more money on schlecty and now the school board and the new super will have a huge mess to deal with.

I have to say that I will greatly miss Dr. Hawkins. He has brought about alot of much needed changes and has boosted the believe that every child can succeed. I wish the best for him and his family. Godspeed and go with the knowledge in your heart that you are appreciated.
