Woman’s Screams Scare Off Armed Intruders Save Email Print

(October 2, 2008)—Two men were in the Bell County Jail Thursday after a Temple woman’s screams scared off two armed would-be robbers who kicked in the door of her apartment early Wednesday morning.

Police responded to the report of the home invasion around 4:30 a.m. Wednesday at Canyon Creek Town Homes.

The resident told officers she was in her apartment when the two men kicked the door open and entered with a handgun, demanding money.

She screamed loudly, police said, which alerted neighbors and scared the two men off.

Evidence led investigators to an address in the 800 block of East Avenue M in Temple where officers were waiting when two men pulled up in a minvan.

Officers detained the men and a search of the minivan turned up a handgun and other evidence, police said Thursday.

Karon Johnson, 19, of Temple and Katory Freeman, 22, of Temple were arrested and later charged with aggravated robbery.

Their bonds were set at $100,000.

"Meadow Ghetto" as it was called before the name change is now a gated community.. yeah right the thugs can still get in, oh wait their drug customers give them the code.. So much for the gates.

Go figure, another incident at "Meadow Ghetto". They should have bulldozed the place down in the first place, instead of spending so much money to repaint and repair it, and to make it a gated complex. I've spent many years in Temple, and 8 times out of 10 when I'd go by that place, there would be police lights flashing somewhere in the complex. I'm glad to hear that the lady was able to scare them off and no harm was done, good job on her part.

I am very worried about the growing number of crimes being committed by juveniles I must say that though we have the Texas Youth Commission in place this doesn't seem to deter todays you from committing these crimes. These crimes are increasing in number and are becoming more violent more guns and knives and more convicted every day. This lets me know that other than our Texas Dept. of Criminal Justice these youth are not scared of TYC they don't look at it as a threat they look at it as a vacation and with that idea it will never deter them it will only be there "All expense paid" vacation. Maybe Texas might want to take a look at the procedures and the program tht TYC functions on and rebuild it to no just be a vacation but a place where they are getting the rehabilitation that it takes to rehabilitate criminals, violent criminals whether they are 16 or 18 or 38. We need this kids to know that we are not their victims we are their elders and they need to respect Us.

Smart thinking, probably saved her life.

There is more to that story if I had to guess. Canyon Creek Town Homes is also known in Temple as "Ghetto Village" because of it's previous name: Meadow Village. And also because it's a low-income housing project. That's where you could go to buy anything you wanted. I'd be surprised if drugs weren't involved or something like that. I could be wrong but that's pretty likely. I know there are some people there just trying to get their heads above ground, but most are people who abuse the system. I know the mailman who used to deliver there and he was scared to because they'd all be waiting at the box to get their assistance checks and would get aggressive if he didn't hand them over quickly enough for them.

That lady needs a little 20 gauge to keep in her closet, it makes the locks on her door work better.
