Burglars Target Growing Central Texas Neighborhood Save Email Print

(October 2, 2008)—Burglars have taken notice of the growth in a neighborhood in the Lake Waco area near China Spring.

Waco police list at least 20 homes and businesses that have been burglarized since May 1.

One resident says she moved to the neighborhood to live in a safe and secure community, away from crime.

"On July 30, my husband came home around 6 in the evening and found that our house had been broken into," Shelley Smith* said.

Smith and her husband have lived in the neighborhood for ten years and until this summer, never had a problem.

Then last week, Smith's neighbor's home was burglarized, too.

"You don't know whether you need to move further out, or just leave the area completely, it's just very unsettling to me," Smith said.

Waco police said this type of crime spurt is natural. The residential area is still developing, and as more people move into the neighborhood, some crime will too.

Police acknowledge burglars are targeting the area, however as officers make arrests related to the break-ins, the neighborhood problems should clear up.

I live only a few blocks away away and we have the same problem in our neighborhood. We know who's doing it!!! We have called the law on several occasions but mommy and daddy lie each time for lil bobby and his friends because they don't them getting arrested. The law said they know but have to catch them in the act! These kids walk the neighborhood streets looking for anything that will open, car doors, garage doors and unlock home doors! Especially late at night after 2AM and during the day when everyone is at work. It's quieted down since school started. We have stopped the problem and I'm pretty they are working other areas now in China Spring. Please keep an eye out for suspicious neighborhood kids that don't belong on your street.....Also the meth heads target these areas for quick cash. Sit outside on a day off or late at night....You would be very surprised at whats going on in China Spring.

Mr.Jim Beam; Guess you're not from around here, or not very old? Everybody appreciates your comment! Waco 'had' a 'great' Downtown, then the 1953 Toronado ruined it, Austin Ave. was a great place to drive and see everybody/everything! Then due to parking, Lake Air Mall was built(1957),(A 'great' place to shop/eat/walk/see everybody! And plenty of parking! Then They tore down a great Drive Inn(Movies, not gas/groceries,etc.), And built Richland Mall(another great place. And the city spent thousands to mess up Austin Ave?? All the people got older/retired, bought homes at Lake-Air(Shoping/Eating/Show). Now we have the so-called new Market-Place-Mall? And bad economic times! The 'money people' (baby-boomers) are 'not going to waste gas/time to go Downtown. Don't want to get killed/raped/robbed/beaten/heat-stroke or cold! I wouldn't go to Cameron Park if you payed me, don't like Indian Spring Park either. But if you or others like it, thats fine! Been-There-Done-That ! Back-To-The-Future!

Quality downtowns will always be short on parking and that's fine cause if they are good downtowns then its a pleasure to walk through them. Not saying Waco has a quality or even decent downtown. Just saying.

I read this article several times, and still 'do not' see anything in it about the supposedly 'fight' that took place a week or so ago, between the woman(from Marlin), and a Student(from China Spring)?? I believe the Article has to do with 'burglaries' in the China Spring Area??? Annonymous,,, you need to go back to the Article that was written on that subject to add your comments!! 2 wrongs don't make a right(in their case)??? Back-To-The-Future!!

Is seems each day we see where more and more reports of crime in Waco. Its really a shame that law abiding people are having to move out of the City because of crime. Most of the crimes are being done by juveniles that know they will only get a slap on the hand for anything they do. Maybe its time the judges start giving stronger sentences to these punks and hopefully they learn there lesson, if not they I hope they like wearing the state issued jump suits. Its time for these liberal judges to get tough or get out!!

It doesn't matter where you live you are always susceptible to a break in. We lived in S. Waco near Beverly Hills for 30 years and never had a break in until the 30th year it just depends on who is moving in around you. Moving farther out or completely away is not going to help.

I think your in the wrong section Anonymous...it looks like your using any space you can to get your point accross and thats not right either. As for the crime problem, I work in a newer community in the Bosqueville area...we havent seen the crime elevate much and we sure hope to not have any...thank you Waco PD for doing what you can to make our neighborhoods safer.

I live in this area and it seems like the crime spurts come when new construction takes place in those immediate areas. My observations tell me that these construction workers scope out certain areas and tip off their buddies on which houses that make good targets. For example, my truck was broken into while a house was being reroofed next door. In our area, people don't steal radios and speakers! (Befroe anybody plays the race card, I'm just calling it like I see it. I'm not stereoptyping. I do believe in profiling and statictics.) In this area, WPD presence is minimal. So, my advice is to organize neighborhood watches and protect your house with a Smith & Wesson!

Yes,when officers make arrest the number of thefts will go down. The related story on Franklin Ave.Where officers are issuing citations is frustrating.Citizens want more traffic enforcement. They get what they ask for and are not happy with that either. What these citizens fail to realize is that increased traffic enforcemennt WILL reduce the amounnt of crime in an area. If you request increased traffic enforcement in your area you better make sure that you are watching your speed!Don't ask for traffic enforcement and then cry about a "speed trap" when you get busted.

Anonymous, I think you are on the wrong article. Anyway, my suggestion is to just leave McLennan County and all counties surrounding it. Having lived here most of my life, it is getting worse each year. Waco will never hire enough police to really protect its citizens or remove the criminal element. Moving out of the city to the county is no better. The lady in this article is right, just leave the area. But if you do, you should be at least 3 counties away from here.

We moved here for the same reason and for the great schools. Still have the same problems with crime, but oh what an improvement in the school system. CS is the absolute best! Could not leave my kids in W.I.S.D. any longer. Grades have sky rocketed out here!

Posted by: MelP Location: Waco on Oct 2, 2008 at 08:42 PM
Maybe if the city would spend more money on the police force so we can get more officers, the crime would stop spreading like a plague. Maybe it is time to redirect money from the downtown pet project that will benefit no one and spend the money instead on the protection of Waco citizens so we won't feel like we have to leave the Waco area to get away from crime. I don't care about a "revitalized" downtown that still has no parking spaces, but I do want to feel safe in my neighborhood.
