(October 5, 2008)--A Texas border crossing closed for more than two weeks because of severe flooding to the Rio Grande reopened Sunday morning.

Presidio's port of entry was again open to private vehicles and pedestrians Sunday after being closed since Sept. 16 because of the flooding.

Torrential rains in Mexico helped swell the Rio Grande and threaten the dusty border town of Presidio.

About 2,000 crossings between Mexico and the United States take place each day there.

Roger Maier, a spokesman for U.S. Customs and Border Protection, said the agency knows the closing was an inconvenience but said it was necessary for safety.

Presidio is about 250 miles southeast of El Paso.

RE: proud mexican.....this was in the headline last week -----(September 30, 2008)—Violent gangs are “spreading like a virus” along the state’s southern border, Gov. Rick Perry said Tuesday, as he called on lawmakers to spend another $24 million on border security. “In my estimation, the most significant threat to our state’s security is the rise of these ruthless and powerful transnational gangs,” Perry said. ------- So, who's having a ball down there??? The border NEEDED to be closed years ago. And if you live in West, you're not driving all the way down to Presidio (just to shop).
