(October 5, 2008)—The U.S. Department of Agriculture is urging consumers to cook frozen chicken dinners thoroughly after 32 people in 12 states have been sickened by salmonella.
The USDA warning deals with frozen dinners in which chicken is raw, but is breaded or pre-browned to appear as if it has been cooked.
Most of those who became ill evidently didn't follow cooking instructions, and microwaved the chicken dishes even though that wasn't an option for preparation.
The microwaves don’t heat the meals enough to kill the salmonella.
Consumers are advised to cook chicken products to a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit.
The health alert was issued after the Minnesota Departments of Health and Agriculture determined there’s a link between such products as chicken cordon bleu and chicken Kiev and the illnesses in Minnesota and 11 other states.
The USDA didn’t identify the other 11 states.
