(October 5, 2008)--President Bush almost made it through his two terms without paying a visit to Midland, his boyhood hometown.
He broke the more than 7-year, 8-month streak Saturday as he flew from Waco to Midland for a quick fundraising stop.
The lunchtime event, closed to the public and press, attracted a big crowd to Republican Representative Mike Conaway's home.
It benefited a joint fund set up by the national Republican Party and the House GOP's political arm.
Mr. Bush was at his Central Texas ranch Sunday, but plans a trip Monday to San Antonio for another fundraiser.
Between the two, Mr. Bush is expected to raise about $1 million for the GOP.
Mr. Bush accompanied by First Lady Laura Bush, stayed less than three hours on his first visit back to Midland since he breezed through town on his way to Washington for his 2001 inauguration.
Laura Bush grew up in Midland and has returned frequently during her White House year to visit her mother, Jenna Welch, who still lives in the city and attended the fundraiser.
Mr. Bush arrived Friday in Central Texas, after signing a $700 billion bailout bill.
