(October 6, 2008)—The driver of a charter bus that rolled over Sunday night on a rural road 60 miles north of Sacramento, Calif. killing eight and injuring 35 others was arrested Monday and the California Highway Patrol says it thinks he was driving under the influence.
Earlier authorities said 10 people died in the crash, but the CHP now says some victims were counted twice.
The CHP hasn't released the identity of the driver, but authorities are investigating whether prescription or nonprescription drugs were involved.
CHP spokesman Robert Kays said the bus had an invalid Texas license plate and says other registration serial numbers also came up invalid.
The bus had "Greyhound" marked on its side, but a Greyhound official says the Dallas-based company no longer operates it.
Investigators were still trying to determine Monday who owns the bus.
