(June 14, 2006)--Officials say more than a thousand National Guard troops will be working at the U.S.-Mexico border by Thursday.
The support-related duty is part of President Bush's plan to free up immigration agents.
Assistant secretary of defense Paul McHale says about 300 National Guard troops are already along the border.
He says the remaining 700 or so are set to arrive by Thursday, to be divided among the four southern border states, California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.
McHale says officials expect the total number of troops at the border to reach 2,500 by month's end.
Mr. Bush's goal is about 6,000 Guard troops by Aug. 1.
McHale and the chief of the National Guard made the announcement in San Luiz, Ariz.
