Police Shoot, Kill Sexual Assault Suspect Save Email Print

A | A | A

(October 9, 2008)—An investigation continues Thursday after a police officer shot and killed a suspect who, according to police, displayed a firearm during questioning.

Deputies from the Bosque County Sheriff’s Office were investigating a report of a sexual assault that occurred at a park on Highway 22 when they located a car in Meridian that matched the description of the one driven by the suspect.

The sheriff’s office says that as the deputy was questioning the suspect, the situation escalated when the deputy attempted to search the suspect.

The suspect proceeded to step away from the officer and turn toward his vehicle.

The officer drew his weapon.

When the suspect turned back around, he was displaying a firearm, according to the officer.

That was when the deputy shot the man in the upper torso.

The man died around 3:00 pm

The deputy was put on leave pending completion of the investigation.

The names of the deputy and the suspect were not released Wednesday.

I've never seen such stupidity!! I can not believe that anyone would take up for a scumbag who would sexually assault a woman, and then point a gun at an officer. These people would probably drive a getaway car for them!! I know the assault victom and would like for you to tell HER that this guy wasn't aggressive!!! That police officer did us ALL a HUGE favor! Thank you to him and all of the other men and women who protect us. God Bless

God bless this officer and his family.

Remember that song..."I fought the Law, and the Law won"...too bad this poor, pathetic guy didn't take heed to these words...

The officer in question only did what he was trained to do in this type of situation. If ANYONE points a weapon at a police officer with the intent to possibly use it, that officer has the right to use deadly force if necessary.

Ellison, get a brain

Posted by: dmg Location: waco on Oct 10, 2008 at 11:05 PM
who was this slimeball??? its time for the media to release his name. the officer did the right thing by shooting him!

Posted by: Friend Location: Bosque County on Oct 10, 2008 at 10:20 PM
I don't understand anyone who would defend this man. He stole a car/truck, assaulted a woman and drew a gun on a law enforcement officer. Where is it that you see this is not his fault? And anonymous from Tarrant County, the rest of his "going down in a blaze of glory" saying was that he was going to take a cop with him. Seems to me this man had a death wish. The officer in question is being investigate per department policy. The dash cam shows him defending himself, but he will still have to be investigated and the case will be taken before the grand jury as a murder case. It will be presented as self-defense and the grand jury will be recomended not to send it to court, which I'm sure they will agree with. This deputy is a friend of mine and is great at his job. He did what he was trained to do and he did it very well. I'm VERY proud of him.

Let this be a lesson! Point a gun at an officer and the officer will make you a deal you can't refuse.

Posted by: Kopperlmom Location: bosque county on Oct 10, 2008 at 06:08 PM
Shame on you people that think this officer did't shoot in self defense.I have known this person since he was a small boy and am very proud of the man he has become.I am glad we to see we still have officers that believe in doing their job to protect us ,instead of harrrassing us as in so many places these days. Our prayers and support are with this young man and his family.

Posted by: Jim Location: Valley Mills on Oct 10, 2008 at 06:08 PM
I truly think the officer deserves a commendation for bravery in the line of duty. It's sad that the suspect had to die this way, but it seems he had a death wish. I can't imagine how stressful this is for the officer and his family. God Bless

Ellison, what does it matter if the gun belonged to the deceased, he HAD the gun in his possession when he AIMED it at a police officer. Anyone foolish enough to aim a gun at an officer deserves to be taken out.

Posted by: proud on Oct 10, 2008 at 03:57 PM
I think that the officer did just what he needed to. As a bosque county resident I am proud to say that we have officers like him to protect us from all the evil in the world.

Posted by: Resident Location: Bosque County on Oct 10, 2008 at 03:23 PM
Ellison, can you read or hear? Look this guy up on the sex offender's list and see what kind of a person he was. Do most criminals buy and register a gun???? I think not. Have you ever heard of dash cam? I bet the proof is in the pudding.

Posted by: psstoff on Oct 10, 2008 at 01:25 PM
"No-brained" comments don't even deserve a response!

Posted by: ellison Location: waco on Oct 10, 2008 at 10:21 AM
Certainally due diligence must be done in the investigation to insure what happened is as the officer says. Let us wait and see. Did the gun actually belong to the deceased? Does anyone know and can testify if he accually owned or was in possession of one? It's a no brainer if corroberating information is revealed, don't you think?

Posted by: Bosque County Resident on Oct 10, 2008 at 09:34 AM
He fought the law and the law won. The main point of this story is that's how we do things in Bosque County.

Posted by: anonymous Location: Tarrant County on Oct 10, 2008 at 09:05 AM
I understand from people who knew this guy that he had been in trouble before and he said he wouldn't go back to the pen and if he got in trouble again he was going out in a "blaze of glory" guess he got what he wanted...good job Bosque County Sheriff!

Posted by: Lawdog Location: Waco on Oct 9, 2008 at 11:24 PM
It's obvious that many of you don't need a brain to figure out how to type a few ignorant words. A convicted rapist & registered sex offender, driving a stolen vehicle, sexually assaults a victim, points a gun at a deputy and you people comment about crap like "what kind of weapon was it" or "My brother was shot in the back" and other pearls of wisdom. Law Enforcement Officers have a right to defend themselves. They don't have to wait to be assaulted, shot at, etc. If your stupid enough to disobey an officer, you deserve what you get.

Posted by: Vet PO Location: Texas on Oct 9, 2008 at 10:26 PM
You did your duty as you were trained and upheld the oath that you took. You have nothing to feel bad about. He made the decision not you. You are able to go home to your family and embrace them. Many peace officers know what you are going through and their thoughts and prayers are with you. Do not be afraid to seek the counselling that will help you get through this and return to being the valuable member of your community that you are. Take care of yourself and your family. God bless and keep you.

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Bosque County on Oct 9, 2008 at 10:25 PM
Bubba, though it doesn't say it in the article, the suspect was showing aggression towards the deputy. He drew his gun, aimed it at the deputy and advanced towards him, all after the deputy told the man to get on the ground.

Posted by: anonymous on Oct 9, 2008 at 10:00 PM
Hey Dick, read the article, the suspect was killed! Hey Joh & Bubba, the article states the suspect displayed a firearm, which is a gun! How is that not aggressive? Are you supposed to wait until the suspect fires the gun at you before you defend yourself? You need to go back and read the article again! Too many criminals on the streets these days. The officer did his job! He should be commended! If this guy had been abiding by the law, he wouldn't have been in that situation in the first place.

Posted by: Don'tUWishUKnew Location: Bosque County on Oct 9, 2008 at 09:56 PM
Just an update, the suspect did have a gun. The Deputy did the right thing. He had no other choice. The suspect was from the DFW area anyone wanting to know. Justice served in my book.

Posted by: Resident Location: Bosque County on Oct 9, 2008 at 09:27 PM
Joh, the article said FIREARM!!! That means gun!!!Did you read the article or listen to the video? Bubba, you trip me out because you think that it is normal for people to run around with guns on them and when the office tried to stop your cousin, he ran away and was trying to throw the gun away? Sounds like a good upstanding person, WHATEVER!! I am proud to live in Bosque County and I am proud of our officers and the job that they do. One less predator on the streets. Thank you Bosque County Officer; it is a tough job that you do and I, for one, thank you for your service. You did what you had to do!!

Posted by: Waco Location: Waco on Oct 9, 2008 at 09:26 PM
bubba, I'm sorry your cousin was shot in the back..but i'll quote from you "as he was running away from an officer..." why was he running if only for a DWI?

Posted by: To Bubba Location: Killeen, TX on Oct 9, 2008 at 08:47 PM
Bubba in Waco. I am sure if you were the officer you would have done the same thing. The punks had a gun and I'm sorry but I would shoot first. The officer is on the side of the law. Your cousing and the person in this article were disobeying the law. What if your cousin had killed someone while driving while intoxicated. Your comment was ridiculous.

Posted by: Roger Location: Mansfield on Oct 9, 2008 at 08:23 PM
All to often an Officer hesitates to act and the outcome is horrific. This Officer reacted as all our brothers and sisters in blue should and there is one less predator walking the streets feeding on the inocents. I pray that he and his family are prepared for the Monday morning quarterbacking that is to come.

I too Live in Bosque County and This Deputy Did his Job He was Sworn in to Do . Now for the Prosecuters Do your Job Find this Law enforcement Officer justified. And let him get back to his job.Prayers goes out to this officer I know taking a life is a very difficult thing to do but seek the help that is out there to get through it...and Great Job goes out to you.....

Posted by: psstoff on Oct 9, 2008 at 04:47 PM
Okay, "Joh"...you said "just because he was considered a sex offender doesn't mean he deserved to die"...would you feel this same way if it were your mother, wife, sister, or little daughter he did this too??? Probably not! If you, your dad, brother, or son had been the officer and this guy was showing aggression and brandishing a weapon to, would you stand there and let them shoot you or want your son to stand there and take the chance of getting blown away??? I doubt it! This deputy did exactly what he HAD to do. And for you who think "Guns don't kill people, Bosque County residents do," go research Bosque County and its Sheriff's Office and see how many times in the last 50 years someone in Bosque County or at the Sheriff's Office has shot/killed someone? Compare that to other counties! Our law enforcement personnel are here to protect and serve the citizens, and thank you, BCSO deputy, for protecting us from another slime ball! I'm sorry it came down to that, but thank you!

Posted by: Seriously Location: the country on Oct 9, 2008 at 04:37 PM
To Bubba: "My cousin was shot in the back by bellmead PD when he was running away from an officer while he was throwing the gun away he had on his person". That is what is wrong with society today. You shouldn't run away from an officer, period. Obviously he knew he was breaking the law. As far as this suspect, justice is served. Everybody knows not to pull a firearm out on cops muchless act suspicious i.e. stepping away from the officer. Again, he knew he was breaking the law.

Posted by: Meridian Resident Location: Meridian on Oct 9, 2008 at 04:10 PM
I think the officer did what anyone else in that situation would do. He is a great officer and my thoughts and prayers are with him.

Posted by: HNK Location: Bosque County on Oct 9, 2008 at 03:39 PM
According to other news releases, he had a long criminal history and was a registered sex offender. He also pointed the weapon at the officer. If you point a weapon at someone, police or not, you should fully expect to have that person shoot back. And a note to Bubba, your cousin showed poor judgement on several things by your post. From what you stated he probably should have expected to get shot. This officer did his job and gets to go home to his family all the while removing ahabitual criminal from society. Saved the state money on encarceration and trials. Good job by the S.O. all around.

Hey Bubba, hate to break it to you but evading arrest is also a crime. And unless that gun was registered running around with it was also a crime. You rednecks trip me out....

My thoughts and prayers are with the officer. This is a difficult thing but know that everyone in bosque county are glad we have officers like him to protect our county. There is one less person we have to worry about hurting our loves ones

Posted by: bubba Location: waco on Oct 9, 2008 at 12:45 PM
You people trip me out. You all have tried convicted and executed this man. I am sure there is a reason to shoot someone who has a gun. It does not say anything about the victim be aggressive toward the officer. My cousin was shot in the back by bellmead PD when he was running away from an officer while he was throwing the gun away he had on his person. His only crime was DWI.

Posted by: Heather Location: Bosque County on Oct 9, 2008 at 11:34 AM
These officers need a LARGE raise. I am a bosque county resident and witness how hard they work and know that they are not compensated enough. I know this specific officer and he is an outstanding individual.

give the officer a raise

Posted by: Don Location: Texas on Oct 9, 2008 at 08:28 AM
The officer was right. You never give a suspect a chance to fire when he is pointing a gun at you. You take him down! It is sad to say that more PDs are going to have to start doing this to get crime in the area under control. The criminals will commit murder and don't give it a second thought. PDs are going to have to defend themselves and take whatever measures necessary to subdue the criminals, including shooting them dead.

Posted by: AMEN on Oct 9, 2008 at 07:59 AM

I dont "feel" for the officer, he did what he had and was trained to do. I DO hope he doesnt feel too awfully bad about it. And if this guy turns out to be guilty of sexual assault, I want to buy this officer a present!

Posted by: Bill Location: Waco on Oct 9, 2008 at 07:22 AM
An officer must rely on his or her training to use deadly force to protect their self or others. It sounds like this Deputy was a well trained and courages officer. Let's remember this officer will deal with his decision to take a human life the rest of his life. Its called PTSD. Pray for him. To him I say; Thank you for having the commitment to perform the hardest part of your job.

THERES ALOT MORE SICKO PERVS HE CAN DO IN, KEEP IT GOING......

Posted by: Joh Location: Waco on Oct 9, 2008 at 06:09 AM
I just hope that this is really what happened because the article did not say gun, it says displayed a weapon, could have been a cell phone or something else, perhaps so to all the readers that just automatically assumed he had a gun, read again, and just because he was considered a sex offender doesn't mean he deserved to die especially if he did not have gun, hopefully the truth will come out, just my opinion, looking forward to the update on this story

Posted by: cantsay Location: BosqueCounty on Oct 9, 2008 at 05:59 AM
I am extremely proud of this Deputy. He has a good head on his shoulders and put his skill to good use to protect and save his life. This idiot should have been shot anyways for pointing a gun at an officer. Glad the scum bag is off the streets, just one less we have to worry about at night when our children are asleep. Good job to all of the deputies and law enforcement who put their lives at risk every day to try to make this horrible world a better place.

We want a person to do their job, then when they do it we tend to protect the guilty, the person who inflected his judgements on another died to meet his judgements, but the one who is left will always bear the violation of that man's choice. Something that words, ointment, counseling, and time will not be able to erase. Only God. Please know that we are praying for you victim, officer, and even for the family left to bear the pain.

justice for the sexual assault victim!!! guess he won't assault anyone else!!! I feel for the officer, but he did what he had to do...self defense.

If a suspect is pulling a gun on an officer, isn't that what they are supposed to do? I wouldn't stand there and let someone shoot me. And if the guy weren't guilty of something, he wouldn't have pulled a gun. I'm sorry that happened to the suspect but seems like self-defense to me. My prayers are with the officer and his family!
