(October 10, 2008)—The body of a local business owner found dead in his home Wednesday has undergone autopsy, though the preliminary results have not been released.

The investigation continues into the death of 68-year-old Joe Sturdivant, who was found by his wife Joyce.

Robinson Police Chief Rusty Smith told News 10 that Sturdivant was found in bed with multiple gunshot wounds that didn’t appear to be self-inflicted.

Nothing was reported missing from the home, which was not the case more than a year ago.

In September 2007, the Sturdivant's were attacked and robbed inside their home off South Robinson Drive. There were no arrests made in connection with that crime.

Robinson Police say there is no evidence linking the two crimes at this time.

The Phone Call
Just before 5:30 pm, Robinson Police responded to a call in the 3100 block of Highway 77 from a distressed wife who found her husband mortally wounded.

By the time police and EMS crews arrived on the scene, the man had died.

Robinson police identified the man as 68-year-old Joe Sturdivant, of Robinson, saying the death is a "serious situation."

The Investigation Unfolds
"We don't know what happened," Robinson Police Chief Rusty Smith said Wednesday night.

"We are taking it pretty serious that we got someone who is deceased and we want to know what happened."

Smith added that it appeared Sturdivant was at home alone when his death occurred.

In a press release early Thursday, Chief Smith said, "Robinson Police detectives have discovered what appears to be multiple gunshot wounds to Mr. Sturdivant."

Some five hours after the first 9-1-1 call, investigators from a number of agencies could be seen walking shoulder to shoulder, searching the vast property for any evidence.

The Texas Department of Public Safety's mobile crime lab and Waco Police Department's crime scene truck were called in, as well as portable lights from agencies as far away as the Lacy-Lakeview Fire Department.

Late Wednesday, Sturdivant's body was sent to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner and Forensic Science Laboratories for an autopsy.

Sturdivant a Community Icon
The Sturdivant Family has owned and operated Sturdivant’s Automatic Transmission, located near South 18th Street and Clay Avenue since the late 1960s.

In addition to being a business owner, Joe Sturdivant was also an avid stock car racer, frequently competing in local race circuits.

Autopsy ia back and shows Joe was shot from behind..Does RPD have any clues? I heard that they have very agressive dogs in and out of the house so would make more difficult for just anyone to walk in and kill him...and for the record yes it was his own child that didnt get her way that filed charges on her father ...

I met Mr Sturdivant once when I was young. He seemed like a nice guy. My dad did some landscaping work for him. Anyway, I am praying for his family. Keep your faith in God. Lean upon Him. He will hold you up. To GLC & Francis, now is not the time to express yourself in a cruel, insensitive manner. A family lost thier loved one to murder. His past does not justify that what happened to him should be taken lightly. You are the only two that has brought this up and I honestly cannot believe your comments were accepted for posting.

Don't know what is wrong with you people! Whether he was "accused" of any wrong doing or not, fact is that he was murdered in his own home!! Prayers and sympathy to his family! If you people don't have anything good to say, don't say anything!

I would like to more about the charges against him Did you say he had been charged with sexual doing with a minor child Maybe the parent or parents of that child came back to get even They said on the news they had been rob in their home something just doesnt sound right with this family sounds like maybe they had some wrongful doings going on and someone is getting even... People in the public eye seem to be the ones that have the most hidden in thier closet....

You may not think he was a crook but if you didn't already know, a good friend of mine's truck was stolen from her very own house, a little over 2 years ago. Her truck was found at Sturdivant’s Automatic Transmission. Also whenever you own a bussiness, you make enamies over the years! Anyone can think what they want about this murder but the truth is that there is now a murderer on the loose! RPD needs to take charge of this and put it to a stop! I also think that its sad how this man had to die like that but whats even sadder is how Robinson is now full of crooks, so who knows whos in charge of this murder. BRING JOE TO JUSTICE!

I am sure glad to hear someone else stand up for this family, Joe was a great man. No matter what everyone else thinks of him because of thing they have heard. Robinson PD is doing a good job, I know they will catch the person(s) who did this horrible crime to a wonderful person.

I have been in-around this family for years. And have always had respect for them, both as friends(private/business). Please have a little reverance for the Family. And cut the R.P.D. a 'little slack' Regardless of 'your' personal feelings/experiences. They are just trying to do their job. PS. "HE WHO IS WITHOUT SIN, CAST THE FIRST STONE"!! PPS. I sure hope they catch whomever did this!!

He was NOT convicted of those charges, as those of us who knew him well knew he wouldn't be. To have been shot multiple times tells me there was alot of anger and hate involved. Someone who was trying to rob him would have only shot once to kill.

Francis and GLC, this is not the time or place for that. Shame on you! My prayers and sympathies to the family!

Hey ex-employee, you got an ax to grind? RPD is doing a great job. Cut'em some slack. So, did you get fired or what?

So sad to hear about Joe. My prayers to his family. Looks like they have another great racer in heaven....

I believe he was indicted for the sex abuse of a minor several years ago.

I think ex employee is referring to Barney Fife, the one bullet carrying Sheriff's deputy of Mayberry. Sounds like he thinks Robinson PD isn't up to finding the killer.

Posted by: michelle Location: killeen on Oct 9, 2008 at 03:24 PM
Barney, Barney Fife, from Mayberry......saracasm is difficult to convey in type. But sorrow does show. My deepest sympathy to the family. May God watch over them and help them through such a tragic difficult time.

I recall that many years ago, Joe Sturdivant was changed with sex abuse of a minor. Do you have any background on that charge and any jail time he might have served? The incident may or may not be connected to his being shot. Please update your report as needed. Thank you

Good grief, now it's dangerous to stay home! People, don't let the anti-gun bunch fool you. EVERYBODY who is mature, sober, and sane needs a gun!

How sad, my prayers go out to the family....it's a shame, home, the one place you could feel safe....not anymore..hope there is enough evidence to find the person(s) responsible....

This a tragic death that has happened to such a wonderful man. I have faith that they will catch this person, that has cause this family such heart ache. Joyce and family are in our prayers.

One of the greatest people I had the priveledge to work for. He will be missed. Need to find out who did it, so better not let RPD work on it. Fife needs to stay at home!
