Courtroom Melee Forces Pepper Spray Intervention Save Email Print

(October 10, 2008)—A courtroom brawl that broke out Thursday during the sentencing phase of a murder trial forced Travis County sheriff's deputies to intervene with pepper spray.

The melee erupted as a judge was sentencing a man to 25 years in prison for murder.

Family members of the victim tried to push their way past the bar toward the judge’s bench, Prosecutor Bill Bishop said Thursday.

According to the sheriff’s office, the brouhaha lasted roughly five minutes; two people were arrested for hindering a courtroom proceeding by disorderly conduct, a misdemeanor.

In all, about 25 members of the murder victim's family were in court. Officials say that while many were yelling, only two or three were trying to get past the bar.

Tex, what difference does it make what race they were- it is the same behavior regardless of who engages in it.

I read about this in the Austin American Statesman; it was a capital murder case, and his co-defendant only got 17 years. Either the case was bad, or the circumstances of the crime were difficult, because if they had been found guilty at trial, they would have received no better than life without parole. Very strange; makes me wonder...

I dont know the exact circumstances behind this case but I would have done the same thing if a family member was murdered and the attacker only recieved 25 years of prison; he could be out in 10-15 years on good behavior...shame on the people who charged the 3 with lessor charges; they deserve nothing more than a pat on the back for witnessing the trial of their murdered loved one.
