The National Weather Service has issued a RED FLAG WARNING in effect until 6 pm for Bell, Bosque, Coryell, Falls, Freestone, Hamilton, Hill, Lampasas, Leon, Limestone, McLennan, Milam, Mills, Navarro, Robertson, and Williamson counties in Central Texas. The combination of strong south winds, low relative humidity, and dry vegetation will create an extreme danger for grass fires across Central Texas this afternoon.

Fort Hood Soldier Killed In Accident On Post Save Email Print

(October 11, 2008) - Fort Hood officials are releasing the name of a soldier killed in an accident at the Army post's rail yard, Thursday.

Pfc. Matthew Sandberg, 20, of Leadville, Colorado was guiding a military vehicle when he was crushed by a rack assembly.

Sandberg was pronounced dead at the scene.

He joined the U.S. Military in October 2007 and was assigned to the 215th Brigade Support Battalion, 3rd Bridgade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division since March 2008.

Sandberg's battalion was scheduled to deploy to Iraq at the end of 2008.

The incident is still under investigation.

PFC.SANDBERG WAS A VERY CLOSE FRIEND TO MY HUSBAND AND IS MISSED BY MANY IN HIS UNIT. WE HAD THE PLEASURE OF MEETING HIS FAMILY DURING THEIR TIME OF LOSS AND I AM HONORED TO HAVE MET THE FAMILY OF SUCH A PROUD YOUNG SOLDIER. THIS WAS A TERRIBLE THING THAT HAS HAPPENED, BUT I KNOW IN MY HEART THAT HE WILL BE STANDING BESIDE EVERY ONE OF HIS FELLOW SOLDIERS AND FRIENDS IN IRAQ AS THEIR GUARDIAN ANGEL. "MY PRAYERS ARE WITH HIS FAMILY, NOW AND FOREVER"

My son's tragic accident shouldn't of taken place! My prayers go out to the soldier that was with him when this terrible accident happened!! When I seen Matt a few weeks ago I had the honor to meet four of his soldier buddies!!! I know that he had alot of friends at Ft. Hood and he's going to be deeply missed by all!! Matt will always be in my heart and NO ONE take that away from me!!!! I love you Mathhew! See you soon baby!!!!!

Prayers go out too Matt's family in Leadville Co and his friends,,Matt was my friend and will be missed greatly. This is a true loss for the famly and country,,He wore is uniform with pride,Matt will still go with his unit to Iraq, as there angel,,,I will not forget his face and his presence in my home just a day before he was killed,,This was a tragic accident and should be investigated, someone needs to be held responsible for this accident. Matt I will miss you

Prayers goes out to this young Soldiers Family, I am One a Strong Supporter of all troops in all armed Forces from all dates Thanks to them we have OUR freedom one thing that isnt Free God Speed for all the troops and for the family of this tradgic accident....

Fort Hood has Homeland Security in place. I think the vehicle inspections that are performed on a daily basis should be a lot harder. I've had my car inspected on numerous occassions, the guards will ask you to open everything and just look inside. Fort Hood is a large Post, there are plenty of illegal items being transported on and off post. Protecting off post Military housing area locations is non-existing. Personally I think all personnel that enters the installation should be subject to vehicle inspections, regardless of age, and regardless of rank.

All in the name of making time lines,suspenses. This is an unfortunate accident that should have never happened. The higher ups preach safety,safety. But the troops get chewed out for not making things happen yesterday. This is a direct reflection of hurry up and accomplish the mission, all the while the equipment was not PMCSed to standard. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Matthew Sandberg was my brother. If this accident has happened before. Why hasn't it been investigated. Why do these young men have to die, including my brother. Someone should take responsibility for this happening. Someone should of inspected it, made sure it was sturdy before they put someones life at risk. Please send your prayers to our family. We really need them.

this is a real tragidy it's hard when someone is lost especialy when he is a fellow soldier in your unit. My prayers go out to his family and i will miss him he was a good guy.

Crushed by a 'rack assembly'? on what? The train car or another vehicle? And, there are other Army post that have problems as well, Ft Hood is the largest post and therefor will always make the news. Now what about the Army Recruters? Any news on their "tactics" in getting our young into the situations?

they should investigate the higher ups in the unit, its not uncommon for the superiors to work the soldiers with 4 hrs of rest or less while conducting the rail heads meanwhile they just relax instead of switch out with the lower rankings.its a very upseting and depressing event that occured, especially before deployment.

Again as i have stated before in other headlines recently about Ft. Hood soldiers dying, someone needs to look into all of these accidents that have been taking the lives of these young soldiers. God rest his soul

This is the second time something like this has happened in less then a year. They take crap care of the soldiers. Also like the third time one has collapsed or died during training within a year and a half and these are just the ones we know about.....
