(October 13, 2008)--A news helicopter carrying a pilot and TV photojournalist crashed and burned Monday morning in a state forest in the Conroe area killing both men who were covering a shooting for KTRK, the ABC affiliate in Houston.

KTRK, on its Web site, identified the pilot as John Downhower and the photographer as Dave Garrett.

Department of Public Safety Sgt. Kenneth Hiebert said the helicopter went down in the W.G. Jones State Forest.

The cause of the late-morning crash is under investigation.

The aircraft, owned by Helicopters Inc., was a 1993 Bell 206L4.

The St. Louis company leases helicopters to about 70 newsgathering organizations.

Its officials were en route to the area.

"All of us at KTRK-TV are deeply saddened by the tragic accident involving SkyEye13 and our hearts go out to the families of the pilot and the photographer,” station spokesman Tom Ash said.
