(October 14, 2008)--Gatesville attorney Sandy Gately was appointed Tuesday to represent Jeremy Lowrey, 24, of Hill County, in the stabbing death of Rebecca Leonard, 52, who was killed during a home invasion at about 4 a.m. Monday in the 3900 block of Watt Ave. in Waco.

Lowrey is held in the McLennan County Jail in lieu of $12.5 million bond; $7.5 million on a charge of capital murder and $5 million on a charge of attempted capital murder in connection with an attack on Leonard’s boyfriend.

Gately was appointed lead trial attorney on the capital murder charge and Gatesville attorney Scott Stevens was appointed second chair.

The woman who reported the incident told police her ex-boyfriend had broken into the house, stabbed her mother and then stabbed her mother's boyfriend, police said.

Yolanda Leonard, 34, told officers she woke up to find her ex boyfriend in her bedroom.

She told police that her mother and her mother’s boyfriend, Jerry Patterson, 67, entered the bedroom and were attacked by the knife-wielding assailant.

The attacker then fled the scene before police could arrive.

Rebecca Leonard died at the scene.

Patterson was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center where he underwent emergency surgery.

Police say he is expected to recover.

Officers later arrested Lowrey near the intersection of West Waco Drive and North 42nd Street in connection with the stabbing.

The incident remains under investigation.
