(October 15, 2008)--A benefit concert will be held Saturday for a college coed who was critically injured when a pickup truck whose driver police said ran a red light while racing slammed into the side of her car a month ago at the intersection of South 18th Street and Franklin Avenue in Waco.
The Labor Day weekend accident left Fonda Jones, 20, in critical condition.
The junior mass communications major at Texas State University is now in rehabilitation, but remains in a light coma according to benefit organizer Jarann Peoples.
The concert begins at 6 p.m. Saturday at Carver Park Baptist Church, 1020 Herring Ave. in Waco.
Proceeds will go toward the cost of Jones’ medical care and rehabilitation.
Jones was driving east just after 8 p.m. on Aug. 29 on Franklin Avenue when her car was struck by the pickup truck.
Two passengers in the car, Kelvin Tomlinson, 19, of Waco and Patrick Lucas, 39, of Waco were also injured.
Police later arrested Noe Alejandro Yanez-Palacious, 21, and were looking for Benjamin Martinez, 21, after warrants were issued for both men charging two-vehicle racing causing bodily injury in connection with the accident.
Martinez was originally arrested after the crash, charged with fleeing from the scene of the accident and then released on bond.
