(October 15, 2008)—Baylor University’s vice president for student life, Dr. Dub Oliver, was named president of East Texas Baptist University in Marshall Wednesday.

Oliver is a 1987 Baylor graduate who joined the university as director of student activities in 1992, became dean for student development in 2001 and was named interim vice president for student life in 2005, an appointment that was later made permanent.

He will succeed ETBU President Dr. Bob E. Riley who announced earlier this year he plans to retire after 17 years of service effective July 16, 2009.

Oliver will become the schools 12th president on June 1, 2009.

“After an extensive nation-wide search, Dr. Dub Oliver comes to ETBU very highly recommended to lead this university as its next President,” said ETBU Board of Trustees chair Hal Cornish, who also served as the chair of the Presidential Search Committee.

“His credentials as a senior administrator are very extensive and impressive. In his current position, he is responsible for over 14,000 students and supervises a staff of over 500 people.”

“Dr. Oliver comes very highly recommended by the Provost of Baylor, Dr. Randall O’Brien, who has recently been named President of Carson-Newman College,” Cornish said.

Baylor is looking for a president, as well, after the university’s Board of Regents voted in July to fire President John Lilley.

Baylor Press Release

Lilley was inaugurated as the university’s 13th president in April 2006, almost exactly 45 years after he earned the first of his three degrees from the university.

Regents elected Lilley to succeed former President Dr. Robert Sloan on Nov. 4, 2005.

He took over from acting President William Underwood on Jan. 1, 2006.

Underwood meanwhile moved to Macon, Ga. where he is president of Mercer University.

He was considered the frontrunner in the search for a replacement for Sloan, but withdrew his name from consideration.

Lilley came to Waco from the University of Nevada Reno where, he had served as president since July 2001.

Former Board of Regents Chairman and current regent Harold Cunningham was named to fill the post temporarily.

In August, regents named George W. Truett Theological Seminary Dean Dr. David Garland as interim president of the university.
