(October 19, 2008)--Former Secretary of State Colin Powell endorsed Democrat Barack Obama for president Sunday, describing the Illinois senator as a "transformational figure."

Powell said both Obama and Republican John McCain are qualified to be commander in chief, but in an interview Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," he said Obama is better suited to handle the nation's economic problems as well as help improve it's standing in the world.

Powell expressed disappointment in the negative tone of McCain's campaign, as well as in his choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as the Republican vice presidential nominee.

Powell said he does not believe Palin is ready to take over as president, if necessary.

I had an opinion, but after reading everything... I am laughing so hard I can't remember what I was going to say! Geez some of you people are freaking crazy but halarious at the same time!

To all you libs out there that want to tax the rich and give it to the poor. How many poor people gave you a job? How is giving someone elses money to a person that didn't earn it "patriotic"? I want to know why lazy people who don't go get jobs and earn it for themselves, gaining confidence and self-esteem in the process, is called being an American? Ridiculous!

This is a "political bombshell"? I knew he was going to endorse Obama as soon as he was the nominee. C. Powell has always leaned pretty left. As far as voting for someone I could give a crap what his skin color is. What are his views and what is his record? Barack Obama is the MOST liberal person to ever be nominated and run for the office of president. His views on taxation, gun control and national security are downright scary. This guy who said he would meet with Achmadeenanutjob without preconditions. Then lied and said he didn't say that. The guy who still keeps saying he won't raise your taxes, but will. Letting the Bush tax cuts will raise taxes. Barack Obama actually has the gall to call that a spending cut. His minions on the news shows actually call it that. A spending cut. When questioned they repeated it. Sorry, but when my taxes go up that is a tax increase. Barack Obama is all about semantics. Study what he said. It is surprising.

Thank you Normal American. That is so obvious I can NOT believe people dont get it. Gas prices go up so it costs more to ship, the company just charges more for the product. Taxes go up, same concept. NO ONE opens a business to NOT make money. Ya just got to do like I do and hate them for it...lol. Actually I dont. Rich people hired me and keep me employed, kinda hard to hate them. Envy yes, hate no.

Ummmm. . . our country was not based on chrisianity. It was based on FREEDOM OF RELIGION. That means that everyone can practice their religion freely. No matter what it is. By the way- I have read revelations and it doesn't say anything about the antichrist or how to identify him. As a person with family in Europe I can tell you that they work less hours than we do and their lives are much more stable financially. Obama/Biden '08

sColin Powell and others have only endorsed Obama or McCain to land jobs in the next administration. It's politics, and it's a game to them. He's just job hunting. -- But Colin Powell in particular is a surprise as I thought more of his character than to endorse a candidate for being a "uniter" and "a new era". Especially since Obama and Powell think oppositely about the wars we are currently in. He must have had to practice saying that endorsement with a straight face. --- to Linsey: the separation of church and state was a campaign slogan, and it is not in the constitution or its amendments at all. America is a Christian Nation that allows everyone to worship however they choose, as long as it's legal. It's not a nation of no religion that accepts every faith as is. There are some religions and practices that we dissallow. No point in getting angry about it. It's just the way that it is. -- To Normal-Straight: good point about taxing big biz and Detroit.

National flat tax is okay by Obama as long as it is 40%. We might as well work 15 hours a day, seven days a week and pay 75% to the government like europe does.

Posted by: Normal Strait American Location: Texas on Oct 21, 2008 at 10:54 AM
OMG! I can't believe how stupid these Obama supporters are. Simple math people, I own a business, I make over 250,000 a year, my taxes are going up, who pays? not me! you do. Everyone of my products have just went up in price. My employees have just been cut by ten, if all that does not work I close my doors and move out. Now then, all the big business gone, all the money gone. What are you left? A very big Detroit. Ask them up there if they are happy. Dream on people. Hide your guns and protect your families....

"I think our founding fathers are turning over in their graves at the insults many American's are voicing at the very principles they made our great country with." Obviously you know nothing about our forefathers. Many of their words would today be considered politically incorrect (racist and anti-Semitic.)

GRUMPY First of all, Obama is not muslim. Go do the extensive research that you apparently haven't done. ALSO Muslim (Islam) is the largest religion in the world.WAAAY larger than your christianity. Who are you say that your relgiion is better than yours? Only you. This country was based on the seperation of church and state (thankfully!) And even if Obama was Muslim, we have the right to choose religion. And you can't say that muslims are terrorists. Thats like saying a japanese can't run for president because they bombed pearl harbor. (which btw killed more people than the wtc)

Posted by: Just Me Location: Here on Oct 21, 2008 at 09:30 AM
It is far from a Bombshell. Of course he is going to vote for Obama because he wants to back the "potential first black president". Yes he is half white, but no one seems to point that out. He would be the first Bi-Racial President in all actuality. I cannot with good conscience vote for a man that we know NOTHING about. A man that dodges every question about his life with the whole "privacy" issue. He will be getting $400,000 of our money to "run" this country. He should be willing to spill his guts about anything we ask. But then again the Liberal media isn't asking the tough questions of O are they?

Posted by: Just sayin is all Location: Ft Hood on Oct 21, 2008 at 07:34 AM
Some of you people kill me. This bailout has nothing to do with Republican Policy. It was implimented by the Dems and just now came to the forefront. What REALLY irks me is all the hindsight by the left. There are NO WMDs in Iraq, Obama and Al Queda is the problem. AFTER we went into Iraq and in the ensuing months all of a sudden everyone is a frigging expert. Before 9-11, find someone who ever heard of any of them. You didnt because the media didnt focus scrutiny on them because the Clinton Administration swept all of the attacks under the carpet so they didnt have to deal with them. In 8 years President Bush had to deal with Liberal foreign policy (9-11) and liberal economics (0% home loans to people who could not afford them amongst others). We get 4 years of Obama, we'll be looking for someone else, a republican will get elected and blamed for the mess. And no, Obama is NOT the anti-crist, he just is not the man to fix this mess.

Posted by: hadnuff on Oct 21, 2008 at 07:10 AM
does it really matter who he supports? NO. Neither pres canidate is worth supporting. Obama/Pelosi/Reid should even scare democrats. McCain is a loose cannon and do you notice that troll Lieberman alawys lurking in the background? McCain and Lieberman have come up with some crazy ideas in the past. Vote for the less of two evils? Which one would that be? What does race matter really folks? We are talking about our country and our childrens future so grow up.

To Jimmie this country is based on christian values not muslin values

Posted by: trina Location: killeen on Oct 21, 2008 at 06:03 AM
Excuse me, 700 billion bailout, no socialism and guess who suspended their campaign to run back to Washington? Oh, yeah, however under the Republican Party, same things just different names, looks like all of their investments are in the cosmetic industry, because i am so sure that lipstick gets pretty expensive.Another example: Sarah Palin, no trooper gate until after the election. However, this okay because she is a Republican that we know less about than Barak Obama, but let's take a chance on someone who mixes true personal relationships with power. What would she do if she didn't like you and she had that seal of the White House? So, if you see this and all of the negative ads the only answer you come up with is what appeals to the South, the good ole boys and all those that only tolerate minorities but in the close doors the ads sound good because we fail to keep it real with our selves.Vote with your families futures in mind and not your prejudices if not welcome Bush back.

BARRACK HUSSEIN OBAMA IS THE ANTI-CHRIST. People are ignoring the red flags and signs right in front of them. His name alone should send out an obvious message. Don't be lured in by his false promises. Read Revelations before it is too late!!!

Essence in Killeen ... your rambling makes no sense except that blacks are voting for Obama simply because he is black? Jim Beam Whiskey... better Australia than Iran. :o) anonymous in Austin... Colin Powell didn't jump ship, he was asked to resign and apparently a still very bitter man because of it. The irony of this is, that most servicemembers would not respect Obama as a Commander in Chief. in so much as his legistative positions shown. Colin Powell once had my respect, but has lost it in this decision, which would affect our troops negatively.

Posted by: anonymous Location: Austin on Oct 20, 2008 at 05:03 PM
I guess my earlier post just didn't get approval on this site. Oh well, will try again. Obama would be a great "Toastmaster" president or how about a community organizer? Look at the crime in Illinois, the debt and the sales tax in his hometown and tell me he can fix anything. Wake up people. And I agree Collin Powell supported George Bush 100%. If he didn't agree with the war, why didn't he jump ship then? Now what?

To Proud Texan... All Powell is doing is trying to redeem himself for pushing the Iraq WMDs to the world, holding a model vial of anthrax while giving a presentation to the United Nations Security Council and saying Saddam needs to go. Then later he got the boot. The messiah has redeemed him by giving him a position on his "would be" administration. It's been in the works for months. Libs are always brainwashed and never know the facts. Shame on you for being ignorant, you poor soul!!! hahahaha

you people are so silly. why don't you admit that you don't want obama for president because he's black. for 1 thing he is also white. i for 1 voted for both george bushes and now will vote for obama, not because he;s black but because he in my opinion will make the best president. he IS NOT muslim. he is part white and thinks RICH people and big business should pay more taxes. have none of you not ever been pushed into a higher tax bracket because you made a little more money? well i have and i am an older white woman. start thinking with your heads instead of whatever it is that you are thinking with. have you ever listened really listened to palin? the woman scares me more then hillary did. thanks for letting me speak my peace.

Posted by: Essence Location: Killeen on Oct 20, 2008 at 03:29 PM
I knew this article would spark alot of comments. The sad part is all the racism that is surrounding this race for Presidency. I am so sick of white people saying that black people are voting for Obama because he is balck. And what is this comment about how black people are looking to Obama as our "meal ticket"? Is that what white people did when Bush came into office? Hell, we all know what a mess that turned out to be. This is ridiculouse people! Hell, I was all for Hillary. Oh, but I guess you're reasoning for that is because I'm a woman right? So ignorant. Instead of not voting for Obama because he is black, how about you do your reasearch on both candidates, and vote for the one that you believe in, instead of going by color alone? FYI, if a black person DID want to vote for Obama becasue he was black, what would be wrong with that? Isn't his being black the reason why some of you are NOT voting for him? Before you start pointing fingers, think about what you are doing.

Posted by: Jimmie Location: Temple on Oct 20, 2008 at 03:16 PM
Those people that criticize others of a different faith, whether Muslim or another and try to create hate towards those groups are of the lowest forms of life. It's unpatriotic, it's un-American, it's un-Christian. So many people try to wrap themselves up in the flag as they say these things, but they are the ones furthest from what this great country was built upon. You attempt to evoke fear and hate. I've known many students of the Muslim faith and those that I have known, the typical "American" and "American student" can learn a lot from them.

Posted by: Sharon Location: Texas on Oct 20, 2008 at 03:11 PM
I would have voted for Colin Powell if he had been running for president. I think he is a smart man but it seems he has lost his American mind by backing Obama. Colin must have got really ticked when he resigned from the Bush admin. Sorry I just cannot vote for Obama. He speaks with forked tongue.

Posted by: jessica Location: waco on Oct 20, 2008 at 03:01 PM
Obama's whole campaign is trying to tie McCain with Bush, but oh wait look who he just selected as one of his advisers. Did you know that Powell served under George Sr. and W. People wake up this guy is a hypocrite and a liar.

Posted by: taxpayer Location: waco on Oct 20, 2008 at 02:27 PM
I too, thought Obama was the anti-Christ but I have to agree with Jessica, he is too dumb to be but he is the beginning of the end. Have you been listening to him campaining? He sounds like a Sunday morning preacher....vote for me or else!! Lord help us all if he gets elected.

Posted by: jessica Location: waco on Oct 20, 2008 at 01:28 PM
Obama is too dumb to be the anti-Christ. As far as Powell goes this is an attempt to salvage his legacy after being at the forefront for the Iraq War. The Democrats are for themselves and their careers. To "Joe NOT the Plumber" you must be one of those people waiting to get your share of someone's hard earned money.

Posted by: Proud Texan Location: Texas on Oct 20, 2008 at 01:03 PM
Patriot, is that really the answer? I can't believe that people are so ignorant as to think the ONLY reason Powell endorsed Obama was to get a job as an advisor...Hasn't be been an advisor for many years and a GOOD one?!?!?! Heck if I ran for President under any ticket, I would appoint Mr. Powell just based on his record... which I am sure that is why Obama is considering it. And please quit with ALL muslims are anti american and want to squash you and me. I have many Muslim friends and they just want what we all do, a free country to live in and to be able to practice freedom of religion. I think our founding fathers are turning over in their graves at the insults many American's are voicing at the very principles they made our great country with. Shame on you!!

To Anonymous about "Joe the Plumber". He is turning out to be a loser just as McCain/Palin is. Old Joe has no plumber's license but working as an apprentice (breaking the Ohio's law). He is worried about being taxed for an income over 1/4 million dollars (an increase from 36 to 39 percent) when he probably makes less than 50K and that is being conservative. That is, unless he and his boss haven't been overcharging their customers.

CBS News Headlines...Obama: Powell Will Be An Adviser---There's your answer as to why Powell endorsed Obama. QUOTE from Powell on questions about Obama being a muslim...."But the really right answer is, what if he is? Is there something wrong with being a Muslim in this country?"...Yeah Colin, that's BIG problem if your running for U.S. Pres & Leader of the Free World. ----Muslim Motto: Burn the U.S. Flag, Death to America, Make the world Islam. --- To redneckdestroyer, Take anther hit from your crackpipe and keep hallucinating. Diablo... in English, M comes before N, as in, you are a Moron!! You & your bro Jimmie and are neck to neck in the Imbecile Race. People, just because a man with a chip on his shoulder endorses another with a chip on his shoulder doesn't mean ANYTHING. If you want to share your hard earned income with crackhead, vote NObama. If Colin Powell was John McCain's VP pick, I'm sure all the below negative commentators would be falling all over themselves saying how great Powell is. Too bad, because he still is great, and served our country well.

Posted by: anonymous on Oct 20, 2008 at 09:56 AM
Okay, Nobama has already made it clear he is planning to spread the wealth around. Just ask Joe Plumber. Now what about that do you dumocrats not understand? You may not mind giving up a portion of your paycheck to those that will not work and want a handout, but I mind very much! For all those that sit around getting welfare and find every excuse in the book to not get a job, I don't want to support you!! Hardworking Americans shouldn't be punished for putting in all the extra effort and time to be successful. I thought that was what the American dream was all about. McCain, Palin all the way!!!!!!

Posted by: Anonymous Location: Waco on Oct 20, 2008 at 09:49 AM
The anti-christ? You poor soul...this is not the end of times and Obama is not satan coming to build an army. I'm so sick of hearing about this. He is a hard working, well educated man that is capable of holding office just like any other political figure in america. Your radical ideology shows your lack of trust in your nation and when you mix it with religion you are playing with fire. This country will survive with McCain/Palin or Obama/Biden for the next 4 years. We will always pull through. Do you remember how many people said Bush was the anti-christ after 9/11...its quite ignorant.

Posted by: John E. Location: Salado, TX on Oct 20, 2008 at 09:44 AM
Colin Powell decided he would pay the military back for all their support over the years by endorsing a presidential candidate who will cut back the military as much as humanly possible. Mr. Powell has alienated himself from every friend he ever made while he wore the uniform.

Posted by: Proud Texan Location: Texas on Oct 20, 2008 at 09:39 AM
I knew the minute that Powell endorsed Obama that people would be screaming he only did so because Obama is black. I am so sick of hearing "so and so did that because he's black". Is this still a free country where one has the right to vote/endorse whomever they want??? And by the way before everyone jumps on my back, I am white and I am leaning towards voting for Obama. I too am tired of McCain's negative compaigning and don't think that Sarah is near ready just yet.

Posted by: Marlin Location: Texas on Oct 20, 2008 at 09:33 AM
WOW! BIG SUPRISE!!! Not! A black man who has thrown all his ideals overboard just to vote for a black man! And you say WHITES are racist??? No suprise here at all. For those who spout that blacks aren't racists...explain 98% of blacks voting for Obama because he is black. As for Liberman? He's a DEMOCRAT who is backing a REPUBLICAN! That shows guts and principle....Powell backing Obama? Shows he's a racist.....and I voted for Obama in the primary...of course, that was ONLY because I REALLY REALLY wanted ONE CHANCE to vote against HILLARY (I figured she wouldn't last till the main event, I was right). Now I am a sexist right???? Truth is, Obama isn't much different than McCain. Go Palin! in 2012! Now what do you say? Am I a racist because I am not voting for the black man or sexist because I am voting for McCain because of Palin? Get real people....nothing is going to change. With a liberal R and liberal D running, what choice is there really??? None.

This is America and he can vote for who he likes. There isnt a person in the world whos opinion matters enough for me to change my mind, and if Powells endorsement makes your mind up for you, then thats the problem. Listen to the plans, read the facts, understand. A vote for Obama is a vote for socialism.

This country is going down the drain and all anyone can do is claim "racist". I dislike obama for who he is, his past, his experience, and the fact that I don't trust him. ITS NOT BECAUSE HE IS BLACK OR HALF BLACK. Everyone I have talked to and everyone I know that does not like obama, does not like him for the same reasons as I, not one, NOT ONE, dislikes him because he is black. The problem I see anymore, is that too many people only "hear" what he says when he speaks, and no one stops to think on those points. People will vote for him based on what they "hear" and do no research or rational thought, thats where this country will possibly end up in the wrong hands. Everyone wants to bash McCain and Palin because they are stuck on obamas "words", who gives a crap if McCain and Palin don't have a list of college degrees and such, they have more experience to run this country, and they have more heart to run it, unlike obama with less than a year, who wont salute the American Flag.......

Posted by: redneck Location: central tx on Oct 19, 2008 at 09:23 PM
yeah , the only reason powell jumped on , is BECAUSE obama is black, or maybe he agrees with the terrists that obama hangs out with. to be part of somthing like he was with the BUSHES, and then jump ship, says RACEIST all over it. i dont think palin has the experience to be president if needed, yeah what expereince does obama have??? that he is black???? that is a cop out all you black folks are using. you will see, think you have a gravy train coming, not when your savior obama gets you a job and gets you off welfare, i will be there to tellyou, i told you so

Here we go with the elitism again... Thanks, Jimmie. If someone doesn't hold a PhD from an elite Ivy League or Northeast school, they are too stupid to handle a bank transaction, much less hold public office, Right!? I have a cousin that holds a masters degree in mechanical engineering, and had to pull an internship at GM one summer. If you want to solve a promblem in car design, 9 times out of 10 if you ask the guy that works on the assembly line and puts the bolt in the hole for 8-10 hours a day, he can fix the problem faster and more efficiently that all of the "college boy" engineers with all of their "fancy book learnin". These are the people that make this country work, not the New England elite snobs that think they're better because they went to a "real school". However, before you jump all over me, yes I am college educated; I just don't hold the mistaken belief that everyting I need to know in life can be found in a book, or that college make me better than anyone else.

Jimmie, all that Obama crap doesn't mean anything except that he had Muslims who paid for his education. Columbia and Harvard don't come cheap yet there's no record of "student loans". He suddenly came up with Ivy League tuitions AFTER his trip to Kenya and Pakistan. You are a blind fool. Anyone who wants socialism should be the only ones to PAY FOR IT!!! Spread your wealth Jimmie....the crackhead down the street deserves it more than you, as your candidate says. I can't wait till the McCain ads come out with Powell addressing the UN about Iraq's WMD and all those pics next to Bush!! That will be the true (bombshell).

I wondered how and when the right-wingers would start discounting and attacking Colin Powell. Predictable and pathetic. I'm waiting for an N-word. C'mon, Patriot. Lemme have it...GIMME an N!!!!

This is no bombshell. Powell has alwars been a moderate Republican at best; and is more liberal on many issues than one might think judging from his service to the country. If the press is going to report this as a "Bombshell", then why not talk about the other Secretaries of State that have endorsed McCain. One of those happens to be Henry Kissinger, who "Barry" made the point several times during the debate to say that Kissinger's ideas on our foreign policy today is "at odds" with what McCain believes. Apparently Kissinger doesn't disagree with McCain all that much, or he wouldn't have endorsed him. Where is that "Bombshell" being reported? It isn't because it would make "Barry" look like the empty suit he really is.

If the democratic candidate was white, Powell wouldn't have thrown his support behind them. So much for Obama's claims of 8 yrs of Bush failed policies because Colin Powell was right by Bush's side. What will Obama claim now?? He should have said, "thanks but no thanks" to distant himself for Bush. I think this actually gives McCain an advantage.....Obama/Biden/Bush/Powell 08??? LOL

This is not racism for Powell to support Obama. You have the racist attitude to think it. You wouldn't say it if a white person endorsed another white person. Obama is clearly the better choice. Let me give you an simple example(but not all inclusive) of why Obama/Biden is better than McCain/Palin: Obama: Columbia University - B.A. Political Science with a Specialization in International Relations. Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude Biden: University of Delaware - B.A. in History and B.A. in Political Science. Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.) vs. McCain: United States Naval Academy - Class rank: 894 of 899 Palin: Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study University of Idaho - 2 semesters - journalism Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in Journalism.

Not that it really matters but I find it a bit disheartening that Colin Powell as a well respected Republican has jumped on the Obama train.

A bombshell? I think not...stop exaggerating. It's nothing but a brother supporting another brother to keep from being ridiculed. Powell just put his zeal of racism into this race which was what it was always about anyway. But hey, Condi has more knads than the 2 of them combined, so who cares?
