(October 20, 2008)—At least 15 prisoners died Monday in a fight between inmates that left part of a prison in Reynosa, Mexico in flames.
The unit is just across the border from McAllen.
The Public Safety Department of Tamaulipas state says the predawn confrontation between two groups of inmates "has left at least 15 people dead and several wounded."
Mexican state and federal police worked to bring the prison under control.
Authorities ringed the prison with soldiers and police and were negotiating with inmates to get access to a section that was consumed by fire.
Because of the situation, officials were unable to give an exact count of the casualties, but local news media quoted officials as saying that a total of 21 people, all inmates, had died.
Authorities did not say what sparked the confrontation.
