(October 21, 2008)— Killeen firefighters have determined the cause of a fire that left six families displaced Monday night.

The cause of the fire was accidental, as a result of unattended cooking, officials said.

At around 8:15 p.m. Monday, several fire crews were called out to a report of a structure fire at the Willows Apartments, located in the 1100 block of Willow Springs Road in Killeen.

The fire broke out and spread through a building containing sixteen units.

Fire crews from Killeen Fire Department, as well as other volunteer departments and EMSl responded to the apartment complex fire.

The first units to arrive on the scene reported large amounts of fire and smoke coming from an apartment on the second floor.

Crews fought the fire for more than an hour, extinguishing the remaining flames by about 10:00 p.m.

Sixteen units in total were damaged by both smoke and water. At least four of the units were damaged by fire.

Seven of the damaged units were vacant; approximately ten people, however, were left homeless by the mid-evening fire.

There were no fire-related injuries reported.

The American Red Cross is assisting the six displaced families.
