(July 2, 2006)—A leading theologian contends in a new book that President George Washington was actually a strong Christian, not a just a deist or one who believes "God is the Creator, but otherwise utterly irrelevant."

Westminster Theological Seminary President Peter Lillback has written "George Washington's Sacred Fire," which is due to be released this month.

Lillback, also head of the Providence Forum, says Washington has been inaccurately and conveniently mislabeled as a deist.

Lillback says his book is based on years of research of Washington's personal writings, which he says demonstrate the nation's first president as biblically literate and as an Christian advocate.

Lillback says he has found more than 200 references to Christianity and the Bible in Washington's writings.
