(July 6, 2006)—The U.S. is dismissing North Korea's threat to test-fire more missiles.

The communist country reportedly has three or four more missiles on launch pads and ready to go, but all are short-range or mid-range vehicles, officials say.

“We're certainly not going to over-react,” Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns said Thursday morning.

Meanwhile President Bush has been talking to Russian and Chinese leaders Thursday, hoping to boost pressure on North Korea to halt its missile testing.

However, the White House says he didn't ask those leaders to drop their opposition to sanctions.

Press Secretary Tony Snow says the President "did not get into that level of detail."

Snow says Mr. Bush thanked China's Hu Jintao for "speaking out clearly" against North Korea's test launch of a long-range missile and he agreed with Russia's Vladimir Putin on the need to "develop a unified approach."

At the United Nations, Russia and China have balked at Japan's call for Security Council sanctions on the North.

Meantime, Snow is cautioning against expecting a quick resolution of the standoff.

"This is not a sitcom that wrap up in 30 minutes,” he said.
