(July 6, 2006)—Local Democratic and Republican party officials will select a nominee for the vacant state House District 33 seat, the Texas Secretary of State’s Office says.
Democratic incumbent Vilma Luna announced Wednesday that she'll resign as of July 31.
The 48-year-old high-profile Democrat from Corpus Christi has worked closely with Republican Speaker Tom Craddick's leadership team.
Luna, who's married and has two sons, says it's time for her family and her to have more flexibility in their lives.
Luna was elected to the House in 1993 during a special election.
She was the first Hispanic woman elected to the House from Corpus Christi.
Craddick says Luna is a trusted colleague with whom he's enjoyed a productive working relationship.
Luna was the only major party candidate who had been running for her District 33 House seat.
Nobody ran in the GOP primary.
