(October 23, 2008)—A gas war in Harlingen has pushed the price of a gallon of gas to less than $2.

The gas war started when an H-E-B grocery store in Harlingen lowered its prices to $1.99 a gallon, a nearby Stripes convenience store went a penny lower.

Christina Machado was among the happy customers, saying she can't remember the last time gas cost less than $2 a gallon.

An H-E-B gas station manager wouldn't comment about the gas prices.

Texasgasprices.com Thursday listed four stations in Harlingen selling gas for $1.98 a gallon and identified others in the city where gas was selling for just a few cents more.

The highest prices in the state Thursday were in West Texas, where gas is still selling for close to $3 a gallon, the Web site said.

What this means is that the reason the price is higher other places is that the dealers want to hang on their inflated profits like they have been doing for a long time,NOT because of the price of oil which is what OPEC has been saying for a long time!
