Newborn Suffers Multiple Fractures; Parents Arrested

(October 23, 2007)—A Temple couple was in custody Thursday after an investigation into the abuse of an 8-week-old girl who doctors said “suffered numerous fractures to her body.”

The infant’s parents, Rudy Arismendez, 29, and Olga Arteaga, 23, were both named in warrants charging injury to a child.

The investigation that led to the arrests started on Sunday after Scott & White Hospital staff members contacted police about the newborn girl’s injuries.

Child Protective Services investigators were also notified and they took custody of the infant and her 3-year-old brother Sunday evening, Temple police said.

Arismendez was arrested Monday on a misdemeanor assault family violence warrant in connection with an assault on the infant’s mother.

Arteaga was arrested Wednesday at her home in the 600 block of South 11th Street in Temple after in investigators “determined that repeated incidents occurred at the family’s residence.”

Arismendez was served with the injury to a child arrest warrant at the Bell County Jail, where he had been held since Monday.

The infant remained at Scott & White Thursday, police said.

This is the very thing that sometimes causes me to want to lose my religion..My husband and I have been trying to have a family for the last 4 years and have had no luck, and these pieces of $h^t were blessed with two angels and look what they have done to them!! I agree they both need to be sterilized so they can no longer do this to another child! If those kids need a good, loving home I They are both in my prayers!

Could it be possible that this child has a freak health problem that causes brittle bones? I've just been wondering about that,because Dr's have jumped to conclusions before. A mother took her child to the Dr. for severe bruising, and was turned in and nearly lost her child, before they tested the child to find a rare disorder. It was a very sad situation. Either way my prayers are with this baby.

white, black, brown, yellow, green, pink, purple, blue, multi (did I leave one out?) -- what does the race have to do with this? Other than the fact a child was severely injured & another in danger -- geez people for the love of God, Allah, Harry Krishna or WHOEVER/WHATEVER you do or don't believe in, get over the "race card" and focus on the real issue here -- the CHILDREN!! BTW, I'm white!

Ther are some comments that are going off track of what happened here.How many children you have has nothing to do with how you treat them I come from a family of 14 children myself and my daddy did not get medicaid to support our family nor was we ever abused. We all work for a living Thank You.

I agree completely with what "Just sayin is all" said. It isn't about race and just because someone is hispanic doesn't mean they are illegal. But I also agree with everyone who says that they don't need to be able to have any more babies.

Lots of racism still alive and well out there for how far we have become. I get tired of being accused for being racist for just saying Mexican, when I mean nothing by it. Now I see why some are offended. I didn't know people were still so hateful. WOW. Anyways, poor poor baby. I don't know how anyone could do that to someone so innocent and defensless. I would take her in a heart beat and love her and raise her.

C'mon people. Those idiots that are posting the comments about the fact that these people were illigally here in the U.S. Those of you that are neglecting the fact that illegals aren't the only ones beating and abusing their children. This was a terrible act and they should be punished to the fullest, but the main focus shouldn't be that they were here illegally. The main focus is that there are children being abused by all races!!

This is why I was so sad at LA for striking down a bill to make mandatory life sentences for child abuse and make the death penalty elegible for sexual abuse. But I didnt read anything that states these two idiots were illegals. You do know some are actually American citizens right? Not every Mexican hopped the "fence". And there have been way too many white women in the news abusing and killing thier kids for us to be pointing the finger at ANY other race.

I've read a lot of comments about these two and the mention of getting both fixed, come on do know what that would cost? A .22 long rifle behind the ear would be a lot more cost effective and lets face it you would never have to worry about repeat offenders. I'll furnish the bullet and the gun.

What kind of sick world do we live in? There should be no "life in prison" ot possibility of parole for these people! Even if the mother didn't do anything, she should be locked up & throw the key away for not calling someone about this sick act! Who does this to their own child, any child for that matter????? God bless this baby girl and hope she makes it through this & the older sibling and the people who are going to be taking care of them -- Lord only knows their parents don't deserve them!

This really is sick. My son was shaken and thrown when he was 9 months old and in the care of his mother and law enforcement boyfriend. Sad to say nothing happened to either one. My child is doing fine now. I'm confident in that old saying "what goes around comes around"

There really needs to be a law passed that anyone that abuses a child be sterilized ON THE SPOT! Better yet, perform it without anesthesia!!! Then , these scuzzbuckets need to be put out in public and required to wear a big sign for the rest of their lives that say they are a "child abuser" and let the public have free game at wasting them!

Sad thing is, on Medicaid you have to be at least 21 to have a tubal ligation. Do you know how many kids some of these heathens are producing from the time they are old enough to procreate until they are 21? I worked in a hopsital where we delivered 5 kids to a mohter on medicaid beginning at the age of 14 till she was 21. We had councilors tqalk to her about having more babies and she refused to get fixed. She is now 34 with 14 kids. ALL on Texas Medicaid. This woman and her boyfriend need to be put away for a while. Unfortunately they will get away with little time served and be able to continue to have babies when they get out.

I agree with all of your posts but the reason to keep producing children is to get that wonderful government check. The more babies the more money they get each month. That is why I work so hard to earn a paycheck to give a little back to people like these scumbags.

This is really sad. There are couples that want kids and for whatever reason cannot have them but individuals like this can just reproduce like rabbits. Both should be fixed so that they cannot bring more innocent babies to be mistreatd.

They need a law to when this happens the man needs to have a vasectomy and the women needs to have her tubes tied or a hysterectomy. They do not deserve to have more children. They will get a slap on the wrist and then start having more kids so the same thing can happen.

Why is it that you must have a licence to catch a fish, shot a deer, drive a car, or get married but any idiot can have a child? Why do you not have a take a test or something to show you can take care or support a child? Anyone that hurts a infant/child is just sick and should NEVER be able to regain custody.
