Two-Dozen Texas Sex Offenders Busted In Pre-Halloween Sweep
Texas authorities have arrested two-dozen sex offenders in a sweep that’s part of an effort to restrict the offenders’ activities on Halloween night.

(October 23, 2008)--Authorities in Texas have arrested 24 sex offenders during a two-day nationwide sweep ahead of Halloween.

Most of those sex offenders were arrested for violating registration requirements.

This roundup is part of an effort that targets sex-offense suspects or registered sex offenders on or before Halloween to restrict their activities that night.

The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force conducted the sweep in San Antonio so streets will be safer for children during Halloween trick-or-treating.

Most of this week's arrests were of sex offenders who violated their registration requirements.

Besides the 24 sex-offense suspects arrested, another 10 were taken into custody on unrelated warrants.

Authorities also developed leads for the arrest of several more in other cities, including in Dallas, where, a 40-year-old man wanted since 1989 for a charge of indecency with a child was arrested.
The ACLU is suing Missouri, saying a new state law aimed at sex offenders is too vague.

It requires them to avoid all Halloween-related contact with children, remain inside their homes and to post signs saying they have no candy to keep trick-or-treaters away.

Texas, Maryland and South Carolina have passed similarly strict laws about what convicted sex offenders can do on Halloween.

On Halloween, registered sex offenders in Texas are required to turn off their porch lights and are prohibited from having any exterior decorations between 5 p.m. and 5 a.m.

Parole, probation and police officers check their compliance.
