(October 24, 2008)—An MHMR Crisis Care Center will be fully open Monday in Waco to serve residents in need of mental evaluation and care.

The facility has 32 beds, and will serve those with long-term mental illness and temporary needs.

Patients are most often referred by doctors or concerned family members.

The new site will relieve some of the burden now borne by area emergency rooms. law enforcement officers and jails.

Until now, the DePaul Center of Providence Hospital has been the only place equipped to receive those in need of crisis intervention.

If it was full, patients had to be taken to Austin or Dallas for care.

The new center receives funding from the state, several grants, and from contributions by McLennan County, which is providing the building, and utilities.

The center will have a specific triage area for law enforcement officers to bring people they've arrested they believe to be in need of mental health care.

Some patients are already housed at the center, and the site will begin full operation on Monday.
