(November 1, 2008)--About 800 members of an Enid, Okla.-based Army National Guard unit are leaving Fort Hood for a nine-month tour of duty in Iraq.

Guard officials said some soldiers from the 45th Fires Brigade left Friday for the overseas mission, but the bulk will depart Saturday and Sunday.

The troops spent the past two months training at Fort Hood.

The unit is usually an artillery unit, but members will be performing base- and convoy-security duties in and around Baghdad.

The deployment of the 45th Fires Brigade will bring the Oklahoma National Guard's commitment in Iraq to about 1,500 troops.

About 2,600 troops with the Guard's 45th Infantry Brigade returned from Iraq last month after finishing a deployment that began in January.

I just want to say I will be praying for the guys every minute that they are gone. As an army reservists wife, it doesn't matter how long our men our gone, its hard, hard for them hard for us, but it is our duty as military families and Americans to support our troops and to support eachother. I will be praying and showing my support until they all come home, something I think we all should do.

I don't care if it's 12 months, 9 days or 15 minutes!! It takes one second for any one of our soldiers to be killed!! How dare you make it sound as if your pain is any greater than theirs just because their tour is shorter. Shame on you Soldier's Wife!!

I think it is unfair for any woman to be without her husband, and any children to be without their father. My step son was gone for 15 months, that was only supposed to be 12. In the NATIONAL GUARD. He was gone when his baby sister was born. It is not easy on any family to have to be separated from their loved ones. You should stop worrying about how unfair it is that the National Guard units are not delpoyed as long as regular military and pray that they will all come home safely to their familes.

You know it's disappointing to read a comment like that because we as military wives period should be supporting each other. Unfair??? Life isn't fair. For most of us, this is our first deployment and it sounds as if you wish that we had it as bad or worse than you did. It must be nice for us?? I think that is the most inane thing i've ever heard. A friend of mine said something that I think is very relevant here. Is it harder for a mother of 5 children to have her husband gone for 6 months than a mother of one child to have hers gone for 12 or more? My life isn't the easiest right now but I am dusting myself off and will be every day until my husband returns. Not to mention, my husband has been gone since August and will not be home untill October of next year so your nine months will be actually fourteen for me. When did this become a who has it worse contest? We are all in the same boat here.

Yea it's extremely nice for us...what a crappy thing to say...

Ok am I the only one who thinks it is unfair these people are only going 9 months when we just recently stopped sending all of our Active Duty troops for 15 months and now it is only reduced back to the normal 12. It must be nice for those families.
