(November 5, 2008)—A Central Texas child is recovering at a local hospital after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a small vehicle.

The accident happened around 7 a.m. Wednesday near the intersection of Avenue O and Magnolia Street in Belton.

The mother of the child told News 10 he was on his way to visit his teacher, a part of his daily ritual, and was not yet on his way to school.

The driver of the vehicle told police she did not see the child until it was too late.

The child was taken by Belton EMS to Scott and White Medical Center.

No citations were issued Wednesday morning; the cause of the accident, however, was still under investigation.

To the mother of the child in this article: KWTX is very famous for reporting crappy news with less than 10% of the facts. I applaud you for coming on here and defending yourself and your son. My prayers are for y'all and the other lady involved. TO KWTX: You may want to consider brushing up on professional journalism!!!

So big deal if he waves to his teacher if he is riding his bike! Teachers are a part of the community too and often times live in the same neighborhoods as their students. It is sad when people jump to conclusions before knowing the real story! And this is to KWTX: If the mother was NEVER interviewed by you as she has stated then I think you could at least fix you mistake and either rewrite this story or take it down completely. Your story could be ruining an innocent teachers reputation by all the ASSUMPTIONS people are making. Remember what happens when you ASS-U-ME!!!!

(continued from mother of child)...Thank you to all who gave blessings, thoughts and prayers. Some of you know us and some of you don't. I appreciate the kindness.

As the mother of the child in this story, I need to clarify some things. First off, I was NEVER interviewed by anyone from KWTX and never told anyone anything about my son going to see his teacher. So, most of these comments are based on something completely false. Who are any of you to judge this situation if you do not even know what really happened? My son ocassionally rides his bike in the morning. He is limited to a small area in which he is allowed to ride his bike. He is 8 years old, 53 inches and 82 pounds. Not a very small child. And reagrdless, there are many children that age riding their bikes and walking to school on that street that time of day every weekday. So what does it matter why he was riding. He does not ride his bike to his teachers house everyday. Sometimes when he is riding his bike, he sees her and waves. He was not in the middle of the road, and he was actually stopped.

His daily ritual to visit his teacher before school? In other words another child left to do what he wants when he wants. It's not the childs fault. I hope he is alright.

I live right around the corner on Sharon road, and knew nothing of this.. I have a house full of kids that live close to me and they are ALWAYS on their bikes.. I'd like to know a little more on this story! My prayers are with the Child!!

I lived on magnolia till i was 10 and i walked or rode my bike to school everyday and that intersection is very very dangerous. Miller Heights Elem. is a block or two away and there are no sidewalks so you have to ride in the road. My prayers are with the family and i pray the boy is ok.

To "I voted for Barack"...this is not an appropriate story line to interject your political preference. You can do that on one of the political stories. How insensitive that is to those involved in this horrible accident. Stay on the topic. Thank goodness the child wasnt seriously hurt and is recovering. I hope the driver of the car that hit the child is ok too. That has to be an awful thing to experience.

To all the Teachers out there...Thank you for truly caring enough for our kids to devote your time and energy to teaching them each day. I am an involved parent an Elementary school in Belton. I have been in charge of Teacher Appreciation there for the last 4 years. We love our teacher and staff. Words can not express enough what teachers mean to the lives of our little ones. My children love and admire their teachers. Thank you for making their leaning experience a wonderful one.

My heart and prayers go out to the boy and his family. As for the driver, I pray you will be able to deal with this and know it was an accident. As for why the child was going to the teacher's house. It's none of your business. Teachers get a bad wrap for what other's have done. Understand, we are teachers because we love this students almost as much as we love our own children!! We care about their educations and care out the future of America. I can't tell you how many teachers are in schools, that actually care and they are treated poorly! Thank a teacher for caring and leave this child and his teacher out of the situation!!

All the judgement on here just shows stupidity. The news was not even on the scene until it was cleared and has mixed up the story. This child rides his bike to go and wave to his teacher on the way to school. All of you who think that this is suspicious really need to re think, teachers are NOT bad people and we care about your children sometimes more than parents do. So, the fact that he says "hi" and waves to his teacher everyday is harmless! What happened to showing sympathy and support to a family in need, instead of trying to stir up trouble!

Thank you for the update Anonymous in Belton. You gave more details than the story did. They should have asked you to write it and then everyone wouldn't have been scratching their heads. Waving is not the same as "visiting."

Angie is right. There are no sidewalks in this area.I live on Sharon rd. AVE O turns into Sharon rd at the Magnolia intersection. My three children walk to &from school here also. The 1st problem is small children unsupervised in the road.(I tell my children to walk in the edges of the yards).Don't trust drivers to watch your children for you.2ND problem here!People drive way too fast on this street!I worry about this every day.Niegbors,Please slow down!Children are unpredictable. They can walk or ride across the street without thinking. It is our responsibility as adults to watch out for them! Thank You!

I lived in Compton all my childhood and I rode my bike to school. I'm alive and well so CHECK yourself. JOSH!!!! Don't start this crap. Blessing with this child

Posted by: MelP Location: Waco on Nov 5, 2008 at 05:03 PM
Thank goodness the child is recovering; it could have been much worse. When I read the story I guessed that the child probably rides his bike to his teacher's house and then he or she drives him to school. I know you should be overly cautious when it comes to your own children, but save your stupid conspiracy comments for a story that is more suitable. You people are freaks.

8-10 IS a small child! visiting the teacher, daily.... WHY?

Posted by: Anonymous Location: belton on Nov 5, 2008 at 04:01 PM
The little boy is doing well and has no major injuries. His teacher lives down the street and each morning he waves to her as she goes to work. The details of this article are extremely sketchy and for those of you who feel the need to jump off the bridge of "assuming", you of course know where that leads. The neighborhood is thankful he will be alright.

Posted by: anonymous Location: Belton on Nov 5, 2008 at 03:17 PM
I do know the family but do not know the details of the situation about visiting the teacher. I know she is a single mom and I am glad she has support from the teacher, maybe she has to go to work early and the teacher takes the boy to school. I am not going to judge, but I will pray for the family. I do know the news prints some facts and little details.

And also please remember...Belton is a small town where a lot of kids know their teachers outside of school. So this is not that unusual. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

Posted by: Angie Location: Belton on Nov 5, 2008 at 01:21 PM
If I were a teacher and I knew a SMALL child was riding to school alone I would be more than happy to check-up on him/or her before the school day started. Look on a map, this IS the bad part of town, every minute counts when a child goes missing. We should all be praising he/she made it to the hospital and praying for their recovery. It's daylight now at 7am since we all turned our clocks back an hour so the driver did not have an excuse for not seeing the child (all drivers must be cautious and OBSERVANT of their surroundings). The school is a couple of blocks away and OBVIOUSLY he/she was on the way to school and not on a mile long detour. Not everyone who lives in the ghetto has money for a car. And dispite however many bicyclists are on the road an automobile driver must give Right of Way to ALL pedestrians and bycyclists forced to ride IN the road because Belton does not have ANY sidewalks, and with cars parked on the street they are forced to ride their bike into the road.

I'm appalled at people's lack of compassion (and writing/grammar skills) these days and their incessant need to voice their misinformed opinions. None of the negative comments below are intelligent or necessary. What matters is the well being of the child, not what your uninformed opinion of the situation, especially considering the lack of information in this article. Plus, an 8 year old is perfectly capable of riding his bike to school or anywhere for that matter unless you're living in Compton. I used to ride 2 miles to/from school every day and nobody felt the need to question my parents' child rearing skills...

BFF: I didn't see where it said he was 8-10. Where did that info come from? I let my kids ride their bikes but they will not go to anyone's house at 7 in the morning. The article does not give much info and what it DOES give leaves all of us wondering what the rest of the story is. Hopefully he will be okay. Maybe all us parents need to give our kids a refresher course on bike safety too.

My prayer are with this family. I have one question? Why is this child going to hs teacher at 7:00 in the morning, and on a daily basis with all the things thats going on with teacher now a days this teacher needs to stay professional. There is a line thats don't need to be crossed. I don't think the issue is that he was on a bike the issue is the time and where this child was going. This raised alot of question. *****History was made today OBAMA is the first black president********

I feel sorry for the ones involved. Where were 'the' cell phones at the time?????? Back-To-The-Future!!

We all have a right to our opinions, however I'd encourage you to find out more about the facts of the case before making a judgement. I happen to know the mother of this child personally and she is extremely caring and protective of her child. I encourage all of you to be sensitive to the family when leaving comments.

Why make something negative outof this...compassion for the child, the mother and the young woman who hit him....Thank GOD it should all be ok and some little lessons learned...GET OFF THE HATE TRIP

Posted by: BFF Location: HERE on Nov 5, 2008 at 11:43 AM
Im appauled by the stupidity that people write on here! An 8-10 yr old is not a small child and MANY parents let their children ride their bikes to school. Its better for someone to not say something at all when they dont have a clue what they are talking about! Have a blessed day and hopefully god will heal your stupidity and shallowness to others feelings in the time of need :)

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 5, 2008 at 11:33 AM
As a teacher, I understand children ride their bikes to school alone daily. This is common. The fact that he has a relationship with his teacher says a lot about the teacher that he is welcomed on a daily basis to her house. Most teachers would not do that; but no assumptions need to be made here. We do not know the whole story. The accident was very sad, but is no one's fault. My prayers are with with child and his family as well as his teacher and classmates.

I do feel bad for those involved...however, the details are sketchy...yes, kids are allowed to ride bikes, but at time of the morning, going to visit his teacher, but not on his way to school....WHAT??? I'm lost...

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 5, 2008 at 10:06 AM
Your comment "DONT MAKE NO SENSE." Kids ride their bikes around town all the time. You should be sensitive to a family who is hurting right now.

He was on his way to visit his teacher? Now! This visit was not at the school,at 7 in the morning. Why would he go visit his teacher at 7 in the morning before school starts, when he see this teacher at school. the was a everyday thing!!!!!! Lot of questions on this one???????

Posted by: Anonymous on Nov 5, 2008 at 08:20 AM
THIS DONT MAKE NO SENSE. WHY IS YOUR SMALL CHILD RIDING A BIKE ALONE TO ANYWAYS.
