(November 5, 2008)—Baylor’s interim president said Wednesday officials are investigating after what resembled a noose was left hanging from a tree on campus, Obama campaign signs were burned, and heated words were exchanged between white and black students after Barack Obama’s victory Tuesday night.

Read Baylor's Statement

Interim Baylor President David Garland, in a statement released Wednesday afternoon, confirmed that a “clothesline rope” resembling a noose was found in a tree on campus and that campus police “are gathering additional information about the origin of the rope.”

Police are also investigating claims that Obama-Biden campaign signs were burned in a barbecue pit next to a campus-housing complex.

Racial tension erupted Tuesday night on campus as white and black students engaged in a heated exchange on South 5th Street near the Baylor Student Union Building.

These events are deeply disturbing to us and are antithetical to the mission of Baylor University,” Garland said.

“We categorically denounce and will not tolerate racist acts of any kind on our campus,” he said.

“We believe that the incidents on our campus yesterday were irresponsible acts committed by a few individuals,” he said.

“As a community we condemn these terribly unfortunate events that do not represent the values we share as members of the Baylor family.”

Two years ago, the university held a series of multicultural forums as part of an effort to promote racial awareness after pictures from a fraternity party that showed some white students in blackface were posted on a popular Internet site.

The controversy that erupted over the photos served as a catalyst for broader discussions of race relations and racial awareness on the Baylor campus.

I wonder what kind of things went on at some of the liberal colleges against McCain or more likely Sarah Palin. You won't hear about any of it on CNN. Just because a bunch or students behaved badly, why do people think they need to attack religion. People behave badly because it's college and the people are young and not politically correct yet. Some day there will be no tolerance for religion at all. Pretty sad.

The noose itself isn't really a sign of hate (as pointed out, many criminals were hung back in the day). The noose hanging from a tree is a sign of one of America's grimmest chapters. The timing of it tops it off. Whoever did this obviously knew it was wrong, otherwise they would've stuck around and the officials wouldn't have to be searching for them. As for any argument that the black students were being unruly first...I don't know if you noticed, but America has gone from slavery to voting a black (biracial) president in a span of less than 150 years. Put yourself in their shoes, you'd be celebrating too.

What's makes everyone so sure a white person did this? Sounds like rascism.

Posted by: Angel Location: Copperas Cove on Nov 7, 2008 at 03:31 PM
Why is everyone so sure a white person left the noose? Is this rascism?

Another person saying get over it. I hate that saying. And to those saying pull this blog. Shut up and pull your own blog. Maybe if enough people see this they will realize how ignorant they are. Hopefully YOU will do the same.

I think it's unfortunate that people have to resourt to this kind of behavior to get their point across. Everyone had a voice in this election... It's called your vote. The people have voted and a candidate won. Get over it people! White, Black, Brown, who cares! My prayer for this election was that God's Will be done and the right MAN or WOMAN be elected. A winner was chosen by the American People and as Americans, we should respect it. I am an educated person, but I don't believe "name calling" is going to solve anything. I am an A&M Grad and a Baylor Grad and very proud of it! I am NOT a racist and I do beleive in giving people a chance. I did not vote for Obama, but I am looking forward to the changes that he has promised. I feel sorry for the people who cannot see past a person's skin color. This issue at Baylor is unfortunate. But if we as parents raise our children "Correctly" (to see people for who they are instead of the color of their skin) none of this would be happening!!

This is 'all' so crazy/silly!! It was just a piece of rope with a loop on it,, anyhow!! It will not make the least bit of difference in 30 years, because 'We' will all be a 'mixed' race anyhow!!!!! Back-To-The-Future!!

a noose doesnt symbolize anything. it was a way of execution back in the day. alot of different people were hung not just blacks but the ones that were sure does make a good pic lol

Posted by: george Location: kosse on Nov 7, 2008 at 10:06 AM
Hmmm.. I guess maybe there is some decent young kids going to Baylor afterall...... the blacks think by Obama winning they now have a magical "I can do what I want and get away free" using the racial ticket card. To all you voted your dark king in-- now the race wars have begun.

A classic sign of ignorance on both sides. Apparently these students need a class on how to get along or may be how to keep your mouth shut.

Posted by: education Location: north Texas on Nov 7, 2008 at 08:42 AM
It may be sad, but I didn't even think about the racial issues when I voted. I can tell you that I am already tired of it. I didn't vote for Obama because I didin't think he was the best man for the job. Not because he is black. These students not only need to go to class and worry about getting their education; but NOW, they need to worry about paying for it. With the direction economy is going; I fear there are many that will need to drop out of BU. I've been associated with Baylor for many years and very proud to say so! These high spirited students need to divert their energy in a more positive manner. We cannot change who is President, but we can change some of the things he stands for. Start getting your groups together to lobby against his issues in the proper manner. I'm sure your professors would help you. Look at the challenges that God has opened for you! Except them! Change the things that you can change, and except what you can't.

This is getting rediculous. So much BS. People who voted for Obama saying we need to come together and yet so many ending with "Get over it". I get the feeling that all the whites voted for Obama (and there were millions) because they thought he was best for the job and the blacks because he is black (bi-racial). And these incidents at Baylor. Obama-Biden signs burned. So what? I'd warrant that campain signs have been burned by members of the opposite party for a couple of hundred years, along with the American flag. A screaming match between black and white students? Takes 2 people to argue, doesnt make EITHER of them right. I disagree with the basic tenents of the democratic party so I didnt vote for Obama. Because I have head all their promises before. But he won, so I will support him and hope he changes things. I really dont like Biden, Reid and Pelosi. Bottom line is I dont have to HATE you to think your an Idiot.

This is very sad to read about a few students who happens to be attending a Christian dominant school reacted is such a manner. Like many people have stated in about this news message, we have to look beyond the color of one's skin. His intelligence and drive is what brought him to the White House. Why be upset about that? This is America right? The melting pot of the world! All we can Americans is KEEP GOD FIRST in our lives. If have a feeling since Obama has been elected (by the way I voted for him), this nation might divide...WE DONT NEED ANOTHER CIVIL WAR! Let's get together and stay strong for Obama and move forward. History is history...LETS NOT REPEAT IT! God is watching and strengthening Obama to lead this nation to higher grounds. Lets all just keep a smile on our faces because we are all blessed. Many countries are not as fortunate. The Baylor students made a mistake, but lets forgive them. :)

Im sick of reading these stories that make the white kids seem so ignorant. The story is so one sided. These African Americans were outside of a dorm raising hell late at night. why? they acted like idiots so those kids had every right to make comments to them. this issue was blown out of proportion. i bet if i McCain won and white kids were acting that way and black kids made comments and burned McCain signs this would not be making the news. Get ready everyone we wont be able to do or say anything without having a finger pointed at us saying we are racist. By the way whats up with the black lady in the video asking if she can say white people so you are on camera so you decide to be politicaly correct all of a sudden ha ok. its sad that both sides cant find fault in what they did it was both black and white students causing this not just the white students. i have black friends and im sorry that there is so much tention now on campus but we may as well get used to it.

I think some of us are failing to remember that Obama is BI-RACIAL!!! His Momma was a white woman. It is not a black thing or a white thing because he is BOTH!!! I voted for McCain but I now must support our new President-Elect! I can't change what happened. As for Baylor, they have a right to protest if they want. It is called FREEDOM! That is why we live in the USA. Right? There have been many worse things go on in our country than burning campaign signs. As for the noose, I don't condone their actions by any means. BUT if someone in California can hang a mannequin from a noose dressed as Sarah Palin, call it "Art" and not get in trouble then I don't see the problem with what happened at Baylor!

Posted by: home Location: waco on Nov 6, 2008 at 06:37 PM
I have lived in waco all my life. Baylor has been a prejudice college since the beginning. The statements by dude, patriot and old school only proves me right. Won a large bet that BALYOR would be in the news when the elections was over with something stupid. Did u listen to McCain speech; "Let's work together".

Posted by: Change Needed Location: Waco on Nov 6, 2008 at 06:32 PM
I am so proud that we the people elected the best man for the job, whether he be black, white, yellow, or green. Like it or not, this has turned into a huge race thing all over Waco. It's not just whites either. I had a man accuse me of voting for McCain because I was afraid to have a black man in power. I was offended. I heard several stories today about black men being openly racist, incredibly disrespectful and hateful; using racial slurs, intimidating and so forth. Racism can go either way and because you are of a certain ethnicity does not mean it's ok. Not to excuse it but we must also remember that people of African descent were openly discriminated against for centuries by our own government. I just hope that all the hate can finally start to fade. Maybe with this new leadership the wounds can heal and we can unite as a country. I know that there have been great strides made but this type of behavior has to stop regardless who is doing it. We must move forward. Now is the time.

I don't agree with the act that was committed at Baylor but I do not think it is fair for you to blame the university. How can you blame a whole university on the acts of a few students? Did you lose respect for Virginia Tech after one student committed an act of violence? No. Because we can not blame the school on what the students do. Now if the school chooses to discipline the students then think whatever you want about the school. But until we see the outcome of this blaming Baylor is not fair. Also just because Baylor is a christian university does not mean that EVERY student there is a christian. I would even go as far as to say that half of the students there do not have a real relationship with Jesus Christ.

I graduated from Baylor in 1998. I am so embarrassed of this I will be taking my Baylor license decal off my car! I saw it on CNN this afternoon and wanted to throw up. How can you ignorant people say it was just a "noose", no big deal, "just symbolism". They are devils hiding behind christianity! And by the way I am white and no longer Christian because of my time at Baylor. I saw so much hypocrisy there, I lost my faith. Symbolism is a very powerful thing you num-nuts!!!!Think about what a swastika represents!! Baylor kids, you all make me sick to my stomach.

I do not undersand the actions of some of these Baylor students to act so inappropriately. I think some of the white students fail to remember that so many of the good black athletes are members of the sports teams that represent Baylor. These fine athletes are an integral part of the university. My son even as a youngster did not characterize his friends as black or white, he saw them for who they were and never for the color of their skin. As a young man now, he still feels the same. I am saddened by these students for their actions on campus. The post by Baylor student Brittany said it best.

There are many good students at Baylor who do not portray the evil racism of this sorry lot. I would wager that most--if not every one of them--make it a point to be in church on Sunday, studying Jesus' teachings and God's word. How awful to have to go to school with such hypocritical children--children taught this hate by their own evil, hateful parents--no doubt "good Christians" as well. God bless America and the whole world too. Get used to it, haters.

Stop and listen to yourselves. It is a "White thing", "a Baptist thing", or "a Something", No, it was one or more persons who did the wrong thing and the more that people look for a group to blame the further we get from the "human thing". I am so tired of the blame game and it may have start with 2 politicans wanting the same job, but when the election was done and both of those humans praised each other for their wonderful qualities then why could it have ended there. The noose was in bad taste and the person or persons who did it should be punished. It is a symbol that was used against a group of people to insite fear and hatred and it should never be used. There are such symbols in history and we should teach our children to respect others.

I think Baylor has taken steps backwards as potentially being an elite university. I am not a Waco native, but I read and research a lot. Maybe Baylor's time and chances have come and gone. Competition among colleges is fierce. This incident, no matter how it plays out will be more of negative that any indoor practice facility will be a positive for this campus. Of course that is my opinion. Good luck President #44.

like it or not Obama will be President, another thing he was voted in by like 63% of whites and 37% of blacks. this should not be a racial thing. It is what it is. I am proud to have voted for Obama and I think change in this world today is what we need.

If it's okay to burn the FLAG OF THE UNITED STATES (see Texas v. Johnson, 1989) the symbol of our nation, then it should be okay to burn some silly campaign signs, the symbol of merely 51% of the public, in a quiet protest!!! Majorites do not always know best!!! Take a lesson from our Founders who wrote the Constitution to ensure MINORITY RIGHTS along with majority rule!! Where are we, America or the former Soviet Union?!

I can't believe the hatred in our country. I did not vote for Obama, but not because he is black (well actually he is Bi-racial). But our country has to come together in support of Obama before our great nation falls. God is in control. Obviously, Obama is in God's plan now. As Christians (BU), we all need to accept God's plan and deal with it.

This is ridiculous that there is such a fuss being made over a rope in a tree. How do we know that someone wasn't just planning on committing suicide and stepped out for a coffee break before doing the deed? I'm afraid that with this election, our free speech rights will be curtailed, because any criticism of the administration will be immediately perceived as racist and the FBI will be called in to silence the opposition.

I grant you if it was remarks made about McCain nothing would have been said in the news, it's the black people that are racist against the white people we just get in trouble for saying stuff not them. They stick together for there race but when the white people do we are the ones who are racist, give me a break. Everyone knows the only reason black people voted for Obama was because he was black or I should say half, he's not even full african american. This is just the begining of all the racial tension to come and it will always be the black person to make it out to be something its not, it has always been that way and always will be.

First... No one is an African American unless they were born in Africa and has received U.S. citizenship. Caucasians born and raised in South Africa who come to the U.S. to receive citizenship are African Americans. Second..... I saw both videos and it appears that students were just having a screaming match over a long, heated presidental race that was finally over. The "clothesline" noose was stupid and silly and I don't condone it. But burning campaign signs is not against the law. Remember, Obama voted NO on recommending a Constitutional ban on U.S. flag desecration. It's called "protesting" which is protected in our Constitution.

Posted by: dude Location: texas on Nov 6, 2008 at 07:22 AM
its a symbol of how people feel, its not a crime to be investigated. the students want to express thier opinion and should be allowed to do so without having to apologize for it. and whats wrong with burning a campaign sign? again its just a symbol. if blacks were burning flags on campus, they would be backed up by the aclu for expressing thier opinions. white people can and will say what they want to say, it is a free country, well, for now at least.

Stupid, childish, immature, pick your adjective, but the story said a clothesline "resembling" a noose was found on campus. On oct 29 an effigy of Sarah Palin was hanging from a noose, racial? Posters of McCain were burned, racial? While personally I would never do anything like this because I DO think it is childish, the fact that Obama is black does not mean that everyone that does not agree with him or his policies is a racist because they are not black. I can see how the image is offensive, but lets get rid of all the racist rhetoric, it demeans us as a country and in some cases is a cop out. P.S. Aimee, Baylor might be offended to see you use the word unexcusable instead of inexcusable

I personally believe that Baptists are among the most racist and intolerant people in the world. That is why I no longer follow this faith. Even if they spent 10 billion dollars, Baylor will never be a world class university until they rid their campus of hate, bigotry, and intolerance. The leaders and citizens of Waco should also view this incident as a learning experience and rise above such things. Otherwize, their hope of being a world class city will never come to fruition.

Well I am a Baylor student, I do support McCain, but the whole racism issue pisses me off. I don't believe in the values/thoughts that Obama has vote this country. I do think that the point the one student has about votes for Obama in Texas, because the electoral is a little messed up. If this is going to be a racial issue, the Admin of Baylor should step in and do something. I am ashamed that the place I hold closest to me is being shown around the nation as a "racist" campus. I am a Caucasian male student, I am personal friends with many of our African-American, or if I may "black" athletes, and I have discussed racial equality with a few. They personally have never thought they were looked down upon. I hope something can be done about all this soon. The sign burning protest is something completely different and I don't have anything against that. The only problem I have is the racism to which our campus is seeing in the past days.

Some Baylor kids are rich, spoiled brats that have never done things on their own like the guy that said Obama votes in Texas didn't count. Go to class a nd go learn man. What a loser Baylor has as a student. And to the person her hung the noose get real.

I am angered by the ugly display that some of the students at BU displayed . Its time for people to grow up and be educated college students. The young man that made the statement that Texas voted for McCain was wrong. There are many of us that voted for Obama. Just becasue Texas votes Republican doesn't mean our vote doesn't count. Go to class dude and learn something. At a Christian school you all should know God made us all and loves us all. Shame on you for bringing shame to BU and Waco.

I am angered by the ugly display that some of the students at BU displayed . Its time for people to grow up and get over the race issue ! The young man that made the statement that Texas voted for McCain was wrong. There are many of us white folks that voted for Obama. I am 59 yrs old and white my vote was for Obama its time we have change in our Gov. and I believe we will get good changes with Obama. At a Christian school you all should know God made us all and loves us all. Shame on you for bringing shame to BU and the Great State Of Texas !.

I agree this is crazy and should be dealt with immediately, there is no time or place for racist acts to be ok. I do, however, think that this country has just made a huge mistake by electing Obama, and that this is only the beginning. I did not vote for Obama, but it had nothing to do with race, if he had been white, pink, brown, purple, whatever... I would not have voted for him, simply because of who he is, his ties, his past, and what he CANT do for this country. I did NOT base my vote on race, this country needs to grow above racial issues already.....

maybe the noose was a left over Halloween prop.

Kudos to Baylor! I think that is a good choice to step in and be the bigger person. The students should have one thing at mind and that's to get a higher education.

As a young African American woman that has spent thousands of dollars educating myself at a university that likes to think of itself as 'elite' and based on core christian values, it's shocking. It's also telling what the members of this student body is made of: closet bigots hiding behind baptist values cheering for their African american classmates on the football field, track, and basketball courts, but loathe to have a man of the same skin as their sports heroes running this nation. Robert Griffin is a 'god' unless he decides to run for president then deserves to be hanged? Maybe someone should tell the freshman womens basketball recruiting class of '09 what they are sure to encounter at Baylor. They are all African American. I wish I had known. I may have attended a different university.

I've never been more ashamed to be a Baylor alum. From a Christian university I expected better...blaming racist behavior on being from Texas...it's just unexcusable and I'm fairly certain Jesus wouldn't have hung a noose from a tree. The administartion can denounce it as much as they want but the reality is they're still a huge part of the problem, not just in this issue but regarding all the intolerance circulating around that campus.

I am saddened by the fact that some of Baylor's student body has decided to show lack of human concern for each other simply based by race. I have watched my mother and two older brothers embrace their college life at Baylor and even now as alumni. I have a grandmother that has lived on the campus over twenty years. Never until the recent semester have I seen as many students as I do now with total disregard for another person simply because they are African American. Keywords being human and American. I feel if they cannot get it together so we can all move forward as The United States then they should be sent home to mom and dad for them to deal with their problems. We are adults here. If they want to act like children then they should be treated as such. But as adults, we have legal systems to deal with racist issues. As you can see with Mills, children, Money CAN'T Buy Everything! GROW UP OR GO HOME!

Some people just can't handle the fact of a black man being the 44th President of the U.S. The election is over with. Obama won. All the people who voted spoke. Why is it so hard to realize that it wasn't just black people who voted for #44. Get over it, and support it, or else you will become part of the problem instead of part of the solution. Baylor needs to take some swift, hard measures on these negative minded individuals, and not just give them a slap on the hand because Baylor is an expensive school. The black students there should not have to tolerate this kind of crap. The nooses and crap like that. It is clear that Baylor is not perfect in itself. They can't seem to keep a college president, and all Baylor does is milk Waco for all it can. Like one of the students said,"the days of jim crow laws are over". It is not that hard to get this bad situation right. Take some immediate action Baylor.

Weak minded people

I hate to say it, but I agree with Kim. I hate to see how people are still so stupid when basing opinions on racial issues all of which are also based in stupidity. I did not vote for Obama, but it was not due to his race... But I wish him well and pray he pulls this country together....

Maybe the college student tranferred from A&M.

I can not believe that any children today were raised to think that hanging a "noose" is all right, funny, or harmless. Parents should be teaching their children to learn from the past and respect how far we have come.

That's good that Baylor is stepping in to try and defuse the situation, and i just pray that everyone stays cool, and just continue for Waco and Baylor to be the community of peace that we are known to be, God Bless, and Kudos to our new President Elect Barack Obama!
