Pursuit That Started In Texas Ends In Gunfire In New Mexico
A pursuit that started after a traffic stop in Texas led to a pursuit that ended in deadly gunfire in New Mexico.

(November 9, 2008)—New Mexico State Police were investigating Sunday after a traffic stop in Texas led to a pursuit that ended in deadly gunfire.

A trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety stopped a 1996 Ford Explorer Saturday morning for speeding on US 60 outside Friona, Texas.

The driver identified himself with a New Mexico driver's license as Jawayne Helfferich, 39, of Clovis, N.M.

A female passenger also occupied the vehicle.

Helfferich drove off and the trooper gave chase.

The Parmer Sheriff's Department and the Friona Police Department joined in the pursuit, which continued into New Mexico and ended approximately 12 miles north of Clovis, after shots were fired by a Texas trooper.

Helfferich was wounded.

He was taken by ambulance to a medical center in Clovis and was later airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock.

Helfferich was last reported to be in serious condition.

The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is conducting the investigation and is working with the Texas Rangers.

DPS has obtained a warrant charging Helfferich with evading arrest or detention in a motor vehicle, a felony.

Ok, now the driver was pulled over for speeding, and there was a female passenger in the vehicle also, does anyone know what happened to her, and why the driver took off, were there drugs or some other type of illegal things in the vehicle, because a person was shot and i just wish there was more info. looking forward to an update on this story
