(November 13, 2008)--Something is lurking in a Northwest Waco neighborhood and no one, including animal experts seem to know exactly what it is.

For the past year and a half a bizarre hairless dog-like creature has managed to avoid capture, even on camera lenses, until now.

Peggy Ashton managed to snap a few pictures of the beast as it stood in the road down the street from her house recently.

"I've been carrying my camera in my pocket. Every time I walk outside I turn it on because it's real skittish," she said; skittish enough to elude animal control officers for months.

They say if they do ever catch it, it will probably have to be euthanized.

So far it hasn't bothered anyone, and neighbors say they believe it’s more afraid of them than they are of it.

Some people believe it may be some sort of chupacabra or monster dog, but a local veterinarian thinks otherwise.

Dr. Jerry Stewart works at Northside Animal Hospital, and after looking at the pictures, he thinks it’s either an old dog or an old coyote with a severe case of mange.

His biggest concerns about an animal like this on the loose are the diseases it might be spreading and what it may do as its condition becomes more desperate.

Stewart said coyotes are known for killing and eating family pets such as dogs or cats.
