(November 14, 2008)—A Rio Grande Valley woman who weighs nearly half a ton has made a court appearance from her home in the beating death of her 2-year-old nephew.

Mayra Rosales, 27, is too big to leave her home in Sullivan City, so she made her first court appearance Thursday via video teleconference.

Court staff members projected her image on a wall as she talked with Hidalgo County state District Judge Ricardo Rodriguez Jr. from her bed.

Rosales is charged with capital murder and injury to a child in the death of Eliseo Gonzalez Jr.

Prosecutors say she struck her nephew repeatedly, inflicting multiple skull fractures and bruises that eventually caused his death.

She's denied intentionally hurting the child and suggested his injuries were inflicted before he came to her house March 18th.

He died later that day.

State law requires that all defendants be tried in the county seat, which in this case is Edinburg.

The boy's mother, Jamie Rosales, 20, is charged with injury to a child for leaving her son in the care of his bedridden aunt.

Both women have pleaded not guilty and are expected to go to trial next year.

Why bother with a trial. What will they do put an ankle bracelet on her and tell her not to leave home. She's already doing that. If that's all they do then it's just another waste of taxpayers money and no justice for the little kid. Remember we put these judges in and we can take them out.

If this woman is on any kind of state assistance she needs to be cut off based on her conviction. Cut off her free money supply, cuts off her endless supply of food. There are ways to settle this, the quicker the better.

I'm with George - board the house up and see which one becomes a "Happy Meal".

put her on a starvation diet - torture her like she did the 2 year old by taking her food away from her - as for the mother of this child, she doesn't care - you don't leave a 2 year old with a Suma woman who can't even take care of herself obviously except shoveling food down her throat! Put her and the mother away for good!!!!!!

Due to this woman's size, which is way too fat, the state needs to build cells that are big enough to hold someone of her size. Just because a person is a two ton tessy, it should not give them special privledges, like being at home after they kill an innocent child. Put this woman behind bars and put her on a strict diet and give her an aggie and let her swing that out in the field, that will take some weight off.

I propose a punishment of a healthy and strict diet of fruits and vegetables. Health food every day for the rest of her life will make her think twice about child abuse.

Both women pleaded not guilty? Someone needs to take blame for this poor child's death. If the aunt would lose a few pounds and discipline the child properly and like a human adult; this horrible tragedy wouldn't have happened. Parents need to start taking responsibility for their mistakes; which is exactly what this is about. I don't even know what to say about this. Both these women need to be locked up and the key thrown away.

Convict this overweight menace to society and have her put onto a strict weight control program, then when she is down enough to go into the prison population move her there and continue the weight loss program.
