(November 17, 2008)--The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, which was heavily damaged by Hurricane Ike, says it will begin notifying 3,000 workers on Tuesday that they will be laid off.
The layoffs are part of work force reduction that the University of Texas System Board of Regents authorized last week.
Regents say they were forced to make the job cuts because the teaching hospital was running out of money.
The regents authorized the elimination of as many as 3,800 full-time jobs.
UTMB is expected to complete notifying faculty and staff members about who will be let go by Nov. 24.
Ike caused about $710 million in losses to UTMB when it hit the island on Sept. 13, and officials have said that only about $100 million of the damage is covered by insurance.

That was my first thought too anonymous. Why did they only cover $100 mil if they knew they had $710 mil to lose? Sounds fishy to me.
Hey whay don't they ask the gov. in Austin for some of the 140,00 they are spending on the new lounge to help his hospital out so maybe some of these people will keep their jobs. HUMMMMMMMMMMMMMM
If they are laying off that many f/t workers, What are they going to do about the TDCJ part of the hospital?
