(November 18, 2008)—The global economic downturn is starting to affect businesses in Central Texas.

Wilsonart International, Inc., a local laminate cabinet top producer, announced Monday it will begin the process of reducing its work force.

The company cites continued declines in the construction market resulting in a significant downturn in business.

Up to this point, administrators at Wilsonart have been able to avoid a reduction in the number of its full time staff.

Instead the company has made what if calls “significant cuts in [its] manufacturing, distribution, selling and marketing expenses”.

Wilsonart has also eliminated all temporary employees in both of its plants

“We are now faced with the unfortunate task of reducing the level of our full-time employees,” company president Bill DiGaetano said in a press release.

The company’s reorganization consists of a two-phase process beginning with a voluntary early opt-out offer.

"We will first look for volunteers who may be ready for retirement or possibly planning a change,” said DiGaetano.

"These are difficult times and thoughtful considerations went into the process,” DiGaetano continued.

“[It’s] my promise that we will make every attempt to work through this difficult time with compassion and a commitment to assist those affected."

Temple-based Wilsonart currently employs about 1,300 people in Bell County.

Is Wilsonart laying off employees from Germany and Singapore first, or are they starting in the United States?

I agree with you Heart-of-Texas. I think several more companies will fall and a lot more jobs will be lost. Layoffs always seem to happen close to holiday season. Times are hard enough already.

Dr. Ralph Wilson always kept work force balanced and paid overtime so these type issues never occured. It is a shame that the leaders of the company did not learn well from the man that made the business. We were a proud group back then, and now I am ashamed that they blame this on the economy. They should have planned better and learned from the past. We always had things to do when times were tough, and worked lots of overtime when business was good. What other stories will the company leaders come up with to make their mistakes look good?
