(November 19, 2008)—Police in Dallas were looking Wednesday for a man who threatened employees of the Dallas Animal Shelter with a baseball bat and took his gray and blue short-haired cat.

Kent Robertson, the shelter's manager, said the man came to the shelter in early October and found his cat among the other animals after someone who thought it was a stray brought it in.

After employees told him he had to pay a $132 fee to take his cat, the unidentified man became upset.

The man returned Monday morning, signed into the guest book and then loaded his cat into a carrier, without paying the fee.

Police say as he left he threatened staff with the baseball bat and nearly ran over two workers in a 1986 brown Ford F-150.

No one was struck or injured.

Police are looking for the man based on the name he used in the guest book.

I agree, you should not have to pay a fee for coming and picking up your own pet. We had the same thing done to us with our dog. Someone picked up our dog thinking it was a stray when it was actually in our front yard and then we paid over $200 to get him back. They aren't helping anyone by taking animals and then coming up with a fine in order for you to get it back. I think it is just a big old scam for them to get some money.

$132 for a cat that was probably free to start with... i understand animals shouldnt run loose but come on thats alot of money. not saying the baseball bat was right but hell he probably thinks of that cat as his kid... give him his cat and drop the charges and be glad this isnt one more unwanted animal they had to find a home for.

$132 for a pussy cat, wow!! You can get some around here for a third of that! But it won't be a grey and blue short hair, hahahah.

They do the same thing in Kempner. if they find your animal on the outside of your fence, they pick them up, take them in, and charge a $100 plus to get your own animal back! Guess that's why so many people are jumping on the animal shelter bandwagon. It's profitable now-a-days.

thats sad. everyone wants to try to profit off any source they can. i hope they never find him & his kitty stays safe with him.

You shouldn't have to pay a fee to have your pet returned to you. The shelter workers should have been happy to find the cats owner.

they say these shelters are too full, then when someone tries to get thier own cat they are told to pay? thats the direction we are turning to these days. we need less government in our lives.

I agree. Basically they are held for Ransom. Pay us or we kill the cat....

With somebody that loves a cat that much, the shelter should have given him three or four more to foster for the holidays.

I know exactly how he feels!!! I had to pick up my chihuaha from the pound because he had been picked up after escaping the back yard. he had a collar on and had only been out about 30 minutes. It's a racket. They see strays and think that nobody will pay money to pick them up but when an animal looks like a pet, they pick them up knowing that someone will pay their ridiculous fees to get their pet back. I let them have a piece of my mind.

According to WFAA(Dallas), the man only had $11.00, no job, and only has about a year and a half to live because he has an incurable disease. The cat was the only thing he had left in this world!! Back-To-The-Future!!

So does this mean if someone steals your cat in Texas that the city can extort the sum of $ 132 dollars from you. I would like to see where it says that stolen property can be profited on by the government. I do not recall in law school where we were taught that 2 wrongs make it okay to treat the voters wrong.
