There’s a slight chance of rain and perhaps an isolated thunderstorm this morning. Tonight it should be clear and cooler.
Sixty-five years ago today, on November 24, 1943, Doris Miller of Waco, the first African-American hero of World War II, died when his ship, the USS Liscome Bay, was torpedoed in the Pacific. A Navy ship was later name in his honor. He earned the Navy Cross for valor during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor two years earlier aboard the USS Nevada, where he manned an anti-aircraft gun he had not been trained to operate and fired until he ran out of ammunition.
