Good morning, it’s Monday November 24 and it’s shaping up to be another mostly cloudy day in Central Texas with a slight chance of rain. Sixty-five years ago today, a Central Texas hero of the attack on Pearl Harbor died when his ship was torpedoed.

Good morning, it’s Monday, Nov. 24, the 329th day of 2008. There are 37 days left in the year. We’ll start the day in the upper 50s and by this afternoon, temperatures should rise into the upper 60s. There’s a slight chance of rain and perhaps an isolated thunderstorm this morning. Tonight it should be clear and cooler.

Sixty-five years ago today, on November 24, 1943, Doris Miller of Waco, the first African-American hero of World War II, died when his ship, the USS Liscome Bay, was torpedoed in the Pacific. A Navy ship was later name in his honor. He earned the Navy Cross for valor during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor two years earlier aboard the USS Nevada, where he manned an anti-aircraft gun he had not been trained to operate and fired until he ran out of ammunition.

America Online confirmed it was buying Netscape Communications in a dramatic $4.21 billion deal. The first Palestine Airlines flight touched down at Gaza International Airport. A funeral was held in St. Petersburg for liberal Russian lawmaker Galina Starovoitova, who had been assassinated four days earlier.

Five years ago:
President Bush signed a $401.3 billion defense authorization bill. The president then traveled to Fort Carson, Colorado, where he paid tribute to the sacrifices of U.S. troops in Iraq. A jury in Virginia Beach, Virginia, sentenced John Allen Muhammad to death for the Washington-area sniper shootings. A fire at a Moscow dormitory for foreign students killed 43 people. Hall of Fame pitcher Warren Spahn died in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, at age 82.

One year ago:
A fast-moving wildfire pushed by Santa Ana winds raced through the canyons and mountains of Malibu, California, for the second time in little more than a month, destroying some 50 homes. In Australia's election, conservative Prime Minister John Howard suffered defeat at the hands of Labor Party head Kevin Rudd.
