(November 22, 2008) – Margaret Mills, former director of Downtown Waco, Inc, was checked into a Gatesville women’s prison facility on Friday to begin serving her 9-year prison sentence.
Mills was sentenced earlier in November in Judge Matt Johnson’s 54th District Court a week after she pleaded guilty to theft of funds from the civic group.
Mills, 67, was taken by secure bus from the McLennan County Jail Friday morning to the Woodman State Jail where she will be evaluated and later assigned to a permanent living facility.
There are women’s units in south Texas but five of the seven statewide are in Gatesville, including Woodman, Murray, Hilltop, Mountainview and Crain.
The Mountainview unit houses women on death row.
Her 9-year sentence means she’ll serve about two-and-a-half years incarcerated before she becomes eligible to apply for parole.
Texas prison spokesman Jason Clark told News 10 Mills will be evaluated as to mental and physical condition, history, background and education before she is assigned to another unit.
Clark said reassignment could take up to three to four weeks.
