(August 4, 2006)--Abilene's McMurry University has lost its final NCAA appeal to keep the "Indian" nickname and mascot for its athletics teams.

McMurry has formed a six-member panel to consider the United Methodist university's options and report to its board of trustees on Oct. 13.

Until then, the NCAA Division III school says it'll make no changes.

McMurry can keep the nickname and forgo NCAA post-season play, change the nickname, continue with its "Indian" traditions without the nickname, sue the NCAA or join the NAIA.

The NCAA bans the use of American Indian nicknames and mascots during postseason tournaments and bans those schools from hosting NCAA-sponsored postseason games.

The group finds such uses of American Indian identities objectionable.
