(November 23, 2008)—Shuttle astronauts hope the fix for a water recycling system on the International Space Station is a relatively simple one.
Flight controllers are having them change the way a centrifuge is mounted in the $154 million system, which astronauts have been trying to get running for the last three days so it can generate samples for testing.
The system is running for just two hours before shutting down.
The space station is supposed to double the size of its crew next year, but that can't happen until tests show the water system is working.
A fourth and final spacewalk is set for Monday.
Mission managers have decided not to extend the mission by an extra day because the astronauts have collected enough water samples for testing.
Endeavour is scheduled to undock on Thanksgiving Day.
