(August 7, 2006)—Fire Monday morning destroyed the China Spring home of former major league baseball player Billy Brewer.

China Spring firefighters called for help from other departments as they tried to save the two-story structure in the 1200 block of Lost Gold Road.

Smoke from the fire was visible for several miles.

A neighbor spotted the smoke and reported the fire Monday morning.

Flames were shooting from the roof when the first firefighters arrived.

Winds fanned the fire, which spread quickly throughout the structure and carried embers into adjoining fields, where several grassfires ignited.

Brewer told News Ten the house had been on the market and had sold this weekend.

He said he had checked on it Sunday.

Brewer said he wasn’t living in the house, but was using it for storage.

Brewer played for the Royals, Yankees and Brewers before his retirement in 1999.
